Jon Cryer Spills ?Two And A Half Men? Details For New Season

With the premiere of Two and a Half Men, and the death of Charlie Harper, right around the corner, actor Jon Cryer has spilled some additional details surrounding Ashton Kutcher’s new character, and how the rest of the cast will move forward in the new season. Find out what Cryer dished to Entertainment Weekly in a recent interview. Long time ‘Two and a Half Men’ star Jon Cryer, who plays Allan, in the series has revealed more details when it comes to Ashton Kucher’s heart broken billionaire character Walden Schmidt. According to Cryer, Ashton’s alter ego will surface, buying the house, after the (what sounds like) the quick passing of Charlie Harper, an event that Cryer shares – won’t be a particular sappy one. Of course Charlie Sheen and fans are most likely waiting to see Sheen’s on-screen persona go down in fiery flames, but from show runner Chuck Lorres’ stand point, he may file the loss of Charlie Harper under “no big deal.” Which would be a bigger insult the troubled star, sending him on a verbal tirade. Allowing both Allan and Jake to live in the home still, Cryer’s Allan sounds like he could be taking on the [...]

"Today" executive joins NBC's 2012 Olympics team (Reuters)

NEW YORK (TheWrap.com) ? "Today" executive producer Jim Bell will also executive producer for NBCUniversal's coverage of the 2012 London Olympics, NBC Sports Group announced.

Bell, who will continue to oversee "Today," will have editorial oversight over Olympics coverage. He worked for NBC Sports and Olympics for 16 years before joining "Today" in 2005.

"Jim's unique background in both sports and news at NBCUniversal makes him the perfect choice to lead our London Olympics production," said Mark Lazarus, chairman of NBC Sports Group.

Bell's NBC Sports & Olympics career began in 1990 when he worked on the profiles for the 1992 Barcelona Olympic Games. In 2004 he served as coordinating producer for NBC Olympics, overseeing nearly 100 hours of afternoon and late night coverage during the 2004 Athens Olympics.

He won Emmys for his work on the 1992, 1996, 2000 and 2002 Olympics, and a Peabody for NBC's coverage of the 2008 Beijing Olympics Opening Ceremony. During his time at "Today," it has led in the ratings and earned five Emmys, seven Edward R. Murrow Awards and nine Headliner Awards.

Galaxy S II finally lands on American shores for Sprint, T-Mobile and AT&T

Well, it's been a long time coming, but you fine folks living in the good ol' U-S-of-A are finally getting blessed with Galaxy S IIs to call your own. Conspicuously missing from the party is Verizon, but Sprint, T-Mobile and AT&T are all getting in on the Super AMOLED Plus action under the guise of the Epic 4G Touch on Sprint and just plain old Galaxy S II on AT&T. As we had heard earlier the Epic 4G Touch is sporting a slightly larger 4.52-inch screen as will the T-Mobile variant (which has yet to score a name or a release date), while AT&T is sticking with the 4.3-inch panel found on the international model. Sprint customers will be first to get their shot at owning one on September 16th for $200, with the other carriers to follow at a later date. Otherwise there are very few surprises here, with a 1.2GHz Exynos pushing Gingerbread and TouchWiz to each gorgeous screen. All are packing 16GB of internal storage and being pitched as 4G handsets -- with WiMax on board the Sprint model and HSPA+ for T-Mo and AT&T. Ma Bell's is specifically championing it's variant as the "thinnest 4G smartphone," which might have something to do with the smaller 1650 mAh battery inside (the Epic 4G Touch is sporting an 1800 mAh pack).

Patients? health motivates workers to wash their hands

ScienceDaily (Aug. 30, 2011) ? Can changing a single word on a sign motivate doctors and nurses to wash their hands?

Campaigns about hand-washing in hospitals usually try to scare doctors and nurses about personal illness, says Adam Grant, a psychological scientist at The Wharton School, University of Pennsylvania. "Most safety messages are about personal consequences," Grant says. "They tell you to wash your hands so you don't get sick." But his new study, which will be published in an upcoming issue of Psychological Science, a journal of the Association for Psychological Science, finds that this is the wrong kind of warning.

Hand-washing is an eternal problem for hospitals. Healthcare professionals know it's the best way to prevent the spread of germs and diseases. But, on average, they only wash their hands about a third to a half of the time they come into contact with patients and germs.

Grant had done research in hospitals before, on topics like getting nurses to speak up about safety and reducing burnout among doctors. But when his first daughter was born, Grant's attention was drawn to the hospital's signs about hand-washing. "I noticed a real disconnect between what the signs were emphasizing and what I knew as a psychologist," he says.

As a psychologist, Grant knew about "the illusion of invulnerability" -- that most people think they aren't at risk of getting sick. His own research had also shown that people aren't motivated only by avoiding dangers for themselves; they also go to work because they want to protect and promote the well-being of others. The problem was, the signs warned about personal risks. These messages should fall on deaf ears among healthcare professionals, who are frequently exposed to germs but rarely get sick. "If I don't wash my hands, I'll be okay. But patients are a vulnerable group," he says.

To test that, Grant and his coauthor, David Hofmann of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, came up with two signs to post over dispensers for soap and hand sanitizer. One said "Hand hygiene prevents you from catching diseases." The other said "Hand hygiene prevents patients from catching diseases." They posted these signs above different dispensers in a hospital and recorded how often people washed, measuring how much soap and gel was used? and having trained observers spy on their colleagues.

The sign about patients was the winner. Healthcare professionals were much more likely to wash their hands if they were reminded that they were keeping patients safe. The patient sign increased soap and gel use by 33% per dispenser, and healthcare professionals were 10% more likely to wash their hands. The sign about personal risks did no good.

"Our findings challenge prevailing wisdom in the healthcare professions," Grant says, "that the best way to get people to wash their hands is to scare them about their own health. Instead, his research demonstrates, you should remind them that hand-washing helps others.

A lot of interventions work well in the beginning, then drop off, and these studies only lasted two weeks. Grant suggests that future studies should test whether these signs would continue to work in the long term. It might be possible keep the message fresh by changing the signs frequently to mention different patients, or to use different slogans, like "Did you wash your hands? What if your mother was the next patient you saw?" Grant says. The punch line here is that it's not all about me. To motivate people to engage in safety behaviors, we should highlight the consequences for others?not only themselves.

(AP) ? Curtis Granderson homered twice to take over the major league lead with 38, rookie Ivan Nova won his 10th straight decision, and the New York Yankees beat the Baltimore Orioles 8-3 Sunday night for a split of a day-night doubleheader.

Granderson hit a three-run drive in the third inning and a solo shot in the seventh. He moved past Jose Bautista, who has 37 homers, and assumed the major league lead in RBIs with 107.

In the first game, rookie Zach Britton allowed four hits over seven innings to lead the Orioles to a 2-0 victory. It was Deter Jeter's 2,402nd game with New York, breaking a tie with Mickey Mantle for most in a Yankees uniform.

But Jeter fouled a ball off his right knee in the third inning, and although he shook off the pain to finish the game, the Yankees captain was a late scratch in the nightcap with a bruised knee.

The second game was tied at 3 before New York hit three straight homers in a four-run sixth. After Robinson Cano connected with a man on, Nick Swisher and Andruw Jones also went deep. It was the first time the Yankees hit three successive homers since May 20, 2009, against Baltimore.

Nova (14-4) gave up three runs and seven hits in seven-plus innings, striking out seven and walking two. The right-hander has won seven straight starts and is 10-0 in 11 outings since June 3.

Brian Matusz (1-7) allowed six runs and six hits ? including three home runs ? in 5 1-3 innings. Adam Jones had two RBIs for the Orioles, whose six-game winning streak ended.

Baltimore led 2-0 before Granderson hit his first homer. He has 11 career two-homer games, including four this season.

In the first game, Britton allowed four singles, struck out five and walked one before being pulled after throwing a career-high 120 pitches. It was a vivid contrast from his previous start against the Yankees, when he yielded nine runs and got only one out in a 17-3 loss July 30.

"I wasn't thinking about getting revenge or anything," Britton said. "You have to have a short memory."

Britton (8-9) has given up only one run over 12 innings since coming off the disabled list (strained left shoulder) on Aug. 22. Before going on the DL, he surrendered 23 runs in three starts.

"Not only was it like a break for me physically, but mentally, too," Britton said of his time off.

The game was scoreless until the seventh, when Nick Markakis doubled and Vladimir Guerrero singled. Baltimore added a run in the eighth when Mark Reynolds led off with his third hit and scored on a two-out single by J.J. Hardy.

Jim Johnson pitched a perfect eighth inning and Kevin Gregg worked the ninth for his 19th save, getting Alex Rodriguez to hit into a double play after giving up a one-out single to Mark Teixeira, who had three hits.

Cano went 0 for 3, ending his 17-game hitting streak. He had also hit in 18 consecutive games at Camden Yards.

The Yankees failed to get a runner past first base in their first shutout loss since June 13.

Bartolo Colon (8-9) gave up two runs and seven hits in 7 2-3 innings. He had a two-hitter through six innings before faltering. He has lost his last three starts and is 2-6 in his last eight decisions.

But he considered this effort to be a breakthrough.

"I feel very happy. Thank God that everything is back together," he said through a translator. "We'll see how far we're going to go."

NOTES: The nightcap was rescheduled from Saturday's doubleheader rainout. The other game will be made up on Sept. 8 at 1:05 p.m. ... Five of Baltimore's six shutouts this season have come at home. ... Britton's 120 pitches were most by an Oriole this season. ... New York intends to activate RHP Freddy Garcia (cut index finger) from the DL to start in Monday's series finale. Alfredo Simon (4-6) will pitch for the Orioles.

Flood insurance: How many victims of Irene were covered?

Flood insurance for damages in New Jersey and New York is big question mark. Share of damaged homes covered by flooding insurance not yet known.

NEW YORK

Hurricane Irene caused between $200 million and $400 million in insured losses in the Carolinas, catastrophe modeling company EQECAT said Sunday, suggesting the storm may have been far less severe than the insurance industry feared.

The bigger question, though, is how much coverage people have for the severe flooding that struck New York and New Jersey, and whether the federal government's flood program can handle all of the claims.

EQECAT said the bulk of the losses it has seen so far come particularly from storm surge and flooding.

Combined with its estimate of $300 million to $600 million in insured losses from a direct hit on parts of the Caribbean, EQECAT now puts Irene's total damage so far in a range of $500 million to $1 billion.

That is far less than its competitor, AIR Worldwide, which estimated Irene's damages in the Caribbean at $1.1 billion.

It is not unusual for catastrophe modeling companies, whose software is used by insurers to model their exposure to natural disasters, to differ widely in their initial loss estimates.

The figures tend to be revised as the days go by and the companies send more teams to the disaster sites to survey losses first-hand.

Still, the early figures compare with some projections by meteorologists and statisticians that Irene could be a $10 billion or more event. Much will depend on how much damage the storm did in the greater New York area.

Loss estimates on the rest of the U.S. East Coast are expected on Monday.

FLOOD DAMAGE

Nationwide Mutual, one of the country's largest property insurers, said it received 6,000 claims calls on Sunday, which is twice what it would usually expect on the Sunday after a major storm.

A spokeswoman for the company said that presents a mystery that could take days to clarify.

They can not tell yet whether they are getting an unusually high volume of claims, which would imply a lot of storm damage, or whether more people are calling than usual because they have already gotten home after the storm, which would imply it was somewhat mild.

``Generally what we're seeing as you move east is a lot of trees on houses, widespread power outages and as you get closer and closer to the coast, we've got coastal flooding, the power outages are even more widespread,'' said Brian Maness, a claims manager for the company in North Carolina.

In New Jersey, the state is expecting damage in ``the billions of dollars, if not in the tens of billions of dollars,'' Gov. Chris Christie told NBC's ``Meet the Press.''

By all accounts, in cities like Jersey City, Montclair, Nutley and Hoboken, that damage will come in large part from flooding that put in some cases multiple feet of water into homes.

New Jersey is the fourth-most insured state by the National Flood Insurance Program, which writes almost all of the flood insurance in the United States.

The state has $51.88 billion of insurance in force from the NFIP, and Jersey City and Hoboken are two of the most insured cities in the state. On the other hand, for example, Montclair and Nutley are two of the least.

Congress is working on a reform package for the NFIP, which has been surviving on a series of one-year extensions amid a debate about the cost of the program and its role in keeping the private sector largely out of the flood insurance business.

Get Natural Home Remedies For Infertility Quick - Family Life Events

pregnancybyline?>by Pat Lovejoy

It is no secret that a lot of couples have issues with fertility, and are right now searching the internet for natural home remedies for infertility. The reason why this issue is unaddressed so often has to do with the fact that conventional treatments can be of themselves painful and dangerous, without any real guarantees and frequently very expensive.

In truth, there are a lot of reasons why a woman may not be fertile and some women will have a lot of frustrations as they visit doctor after doctor getting negative tests for all physical causes of infertility but still being unable to conceive. In fact, there is a multitude of ways that a woman?s fertility level can decrease and she may not be aware of many of them.

It is no secret that alcohol affects the fertility of a woman in many undesirable ways. Alcohol can decrease chances of getting pregnant, but worse than that, it can also cause serious birth defects. It is very important that any woman who wants to have a baby avoid drinking any alcohol whatsoever, as even a small amount can cause issues.

Another commonly consumed drink is coffee which contains caffeine. It has been found in some studies that caffeine, which is contained not only in coffee but also in many carbonated soft drinks and energy drinks, can decrease the fertility level of a woman by a high percentage. For this reason, it is a good idea that a woman who is trying to get pregnant avoids both alcohol and coffee.

Along with avoiding undesirable substances such as caffeine and alcohol, it is important that a woman makes sure that her body is well taken care of and as healthy as possible. There are many vitamins and nutrients which work with the body?s reproductive system and lacking one or all of these can make it hard for a woman to get pregnant. Vitamin C, for example, is essential to a healthy immune system.

Nitric oxide is the second of these three essential nutrients and many commonly offered vitamin supplements at health stores can help a woman in getting their recommended dose of this substance. Nitric oxide helps by directing more blood flow to the reproductive organs. Folic acid is another commonly prescribed vitamin which does not only boost fertility but can also help the unborn baby be healthier as well.

Women who are trying to become pregnant are recommended to consume at least seven servings of fruits and vegetables. Of these servings, several should be focused onto folic acid. Foods which contain folic acid are broccoli, spinach, and lentils. Fruits such as oranges, papaya, kiwi, and cantaloupe are very high in Vitamin C and also should be consumed. Along with this, it is important to eat whole grain foods and drink plenty of fluids.

When it comes to natural home remedies for infertility, it is important to consider the diet of the person affected as what a person eats will affect how the body responds to the regular fertility cycle and the chances that a person in question may get pregnant and carry a healthy child to term.

What should you consider before buying an exotic ... - Home & Family

Exotic pets have become more popular with households looking to have something more unusual than the average dog or cat. The possibilities that are available today are incredible, and you can find a huge array of different animals looking for homes. However, you need to bear in mind that the pet care for these animals can be very different.

Although all animals require a lot of pet care and love, exotic pets will require specialist care and equipment. There are several things that you need to consider before rushing out to purchase your new pet. You will need to consider if you have the facilities and experience to give the exotic pets everything they need.

Research is very important when looking at buying exotic pets, so you fully understand what pet care the animals will require. You will need to learn about every aspect of the animal, including their housing, feeding, and general day to day care. If you do not fully appreciate the time and effort that goes into exotic pets , you could endanger them. You will need to carefully consider the exotic pets that you want to purchase and why you have chosen that animal. There are many different animals to choose, and you have to consider if you can give them the best pet care available. As well as the care that you can offer the exotic pets you need to ensure that you get them from the correct store. Far too many pet stores sell exotic pets and have no real knowledge of their pet care, and what they need to lead a healthy lifestyle. If you buy your pet from a pet store with no expert knowledge, you may, in fact, be purchasing a sick animal. Exotic pets are far more difficult to diagnose when they are ill, you simply have to rely on the information that is shared by the store.

Incorrect advice is often given by pet stores who do not understand the animals they have, and simply want to make money from the exotic pets. You should research the different pet stores in your area and see if you can find an expert on exotic animals and their pet care. If you are fortunate enough to have one of these stores, you will know that your animal is in the right hands.

They will not only be able to advise you on the best exotic pets available, also the pet care that they will need. If you have a support network for the exotic pets that you want to own, you will be able to offer the animals the best possible after care. Although exotic pets take more specialist care, they still need basic pet care, as well.

As with any animal you will need to seriously consider if you have the time, money, space and resources to offer an animal a home. Exotic pets like any other animal will rely on you every day to provide them with food, water and shelter. Animals are a full time commitment that you need to be aware of before rushing out to purchase them.

Bad night at Bristol for drivers on Chase bubble | The Associated ...

It didn't take long for Paul Menard's race to go awry at Bristol Motor Speedway.

Flagged for speeding on pit road a mere 34 laps into Saturday night's race, the penalty set the tone for a disappointing night for Menard and a handful of other drivers trying desperately to make the Chase for the Sprint Cup championship.

"Man, we're giving it away right now for sure," said Menard. "Just a bad night. Frustrating. If there is something that could have gone wrong, it did."

Menard, who also ran into the back of Denny Hamlin as the two tried to avoid a wreck in front of them, finished 30th and dropped two spots in the standings to 20th. It's a nightmare slide for a driver who just one month ago earned a breakthrough victory at Indianapolis to jump into the race for a Chase berth.

New NASCAR rules this season created two wild-cards into the 12-driver Chase field. The spots are designated for the two drivers with the most victories who aren't already ranked inside the top-10 in points.

The format has created tremendous uncertainty as to who will make the Chase with two races remaining to set the field. Four drivers at the top of the standings ? Kyle Busch, Jimmie Johnson, Matt Kenseth and Carl Edwards ? clinched Chase berths, but of the "bubble" drivers, only Brad Keselowski and Denny Hamlin did anything to help themselves.

Keselowski picked up his third win of the season, which should almost guarantee him one of the wild cards. It also moved him to 11th in the standings, and he's only 21 points away from unseating Tony Stewart for the 10th position and locking in his berth.

"Who's 10th? Is it Tony? Tony is pretty good," Keselowski said. "Beating Tony Stewart by an average of 10 positions over two races, that's going to be pretty tough to be honest."

Try telling that to Stewart, who has run terrible of late.

A week after declaring his Stewart-Haas Racing team doesn't deserve a spot in the Chase, Stewart backed it up with one of the most perplexing weekends of his career. He qualified last in the 43-car field on the same day teammate Ryan Newman won the pole.

Although he vowed in driver introductions not to stay in the back of the pack for long, he was lapped early and often as Stewart struggled to a 28th-place finish.

"It's no different than it was last week," Stewart said. "The feeling is the same ? you still want to make it. We're working hard at it."

Clint Bowyer was just as bad as Stewart on Saturday night, even though Bristol is one of his better tracks.

Hoping to use his push to make the Chase as a distraction to his messy free agency, Bowyer instead ran in the back of the pack near Stewart most of the race and finished 26th. He dropped a spot in the standings to 12th, and because he's winless this season, he'd be bounced out of the Chase by wild card drivers.

It's got to have everyone at Richard Childress Racing on edge, especially since the team owner guaranteed one of his drivers would unseat five-time defending champion Jimmie Johnson this year. Instead, Kevin Harvick struggled again and dropped two more spots in the standings to fifth, Bowyer put himself in a deep hole and Menard likely needs a miracle.

Dale Earnhardt Jr., meanwhile, was satisfied with his 16th-place finish. He held pat at ninth in points, but still needs good finishes at Atlanta and Richmond to ensure his first Chase berth since 2008.

"We struggled all night, really, trying to get a good car," Earnhardt said. "We were just slow. We didn't have enough grip. Just sliding around a whole lot. Thankful to finish where we did."

Same goes for Hamlin, who nearly took the title from Johnson last year but has been a strong championship contender this year. His crash last week at Michigan dropped him to 14th in the standings and forced him into conservative mode to save his season.

But he's been plagued by bad luck this season, and Saturday was no different when Menard ran into him to create considerable damage to the back of his Joe Gibbs Racing car. Crew chief Mike Ford was methodical as he dictated the repairs Hamlin needed and the time the crew had to complete the work, and Hamlin managed to stay on the lead lap.

He eventually rallied to a seventh-place finish ? his first top-10 in five races.

Hamlin moved up to 13th in the standings, and would be the second wild card right now by virtue of his one victory this season.

"I feel a lot better," he said. "It's been a while since we've completed a race and been able to finish where we're capable of finishing. We got hit and spun and I was like 'Of course, it's our luck.' But we were able to make something of it and battle back."

ScienceDaily (Aug. 25, 2011) ? Reducing the risks of catching E. coli O157 in the countryside is everyone's problem. That means we should all take responsibility -- individual residents and visitors, as well as farmers and government -- according to researchers working on the Research Councils UK Rural Economy and Land Use Programme (RELU).

E. coli O157 is the most common of the harmful strains of the bacteria and this interdisciplinary research has investigated not just its characteristics, but also how people understand E. coli O157 and how their behaviour affects the threats that it poses. E. coli O157 must be swallowed to infect people it can be contracted from food, water or by contact with farm animals, particularly sheep and cattle, and their faeces.

In one-to-one interviews, the researchers found that people believed others should do more to reduce the risk of infection. While farmers thought that abattoirs should do more to prevent outbreaks, abattoir owners said that farmers should do more through better cleaning of livestock before slaughter, and butchers claimed that meat inspectors could be more effective.

In a survey of over two thousand rural residents and visitors, around 45 per cent of all respondents thought that health authorities as well as central and local government should be taking more action to protect the public. But the researchers say that E. coli O157 infection isn't a problem that is easily solved, and the most effective way of addressing it would be for everyone to adopt behaviours and strategies to reduce risks.

For governments at local and national level this means better understanding of where risks are highest, and having effective inspections of abattoirs and waste disposals, and visitor attractions such as open farms to ensure appropriate precautions are in place.

Farmers need to think about the risks on their land as well as in the abattoir. If they are providing camping facilities for example, it is important that these are not in fields where animals have been grazing recently. This is very important as the E. coli O157 bacteria may survive for more than 15 weeks in soil and pasture.

Visitors also need to be aware of the risks of infection and take appropriate action themselves. Many people know about the risks of contaminated food and the importance of washing vegetables and cooking meat properly, but the research shows that 72 per cent of rural visitors say they have never heard of this germ, so cannot be aware that it is often present in the rural environment, nor how long it can survive there.

Even in areas where there have been high profile outbreaks of E. coli O157, and where residents are much better informed, for example in the Grampian region of Scotland, they tend not to see themselves as being at risk.

Dr Norval Strachan, from the University of Aberdeen, who led the research, explains: "E. coli O157 can cause very serious illness, especially in young children. But our research suggests that everyone has to take responsibility to reduce the risk from these dangerous bacteria."

"The reality is that the germ is often present in the faeces of sheep and cattle, and while animals are unaffected, it can have serious consequences for people that swallow it, either via contaminated food or in the rural environment."

"Research has found that the bacteria can persist for example, on stiles and farm gates, where people routinely put their hands. So if you are going on a picnic in an area where there are farm animals, that is something to bear in mind."

"But we don't want to put people off enjoying the countryside. Simple precautions such as washing your hands with soap and water provide the best protection, particularly after touching farm animals and before handling food. If this is not available then moist wipes (preferably antibacterial) should be used until hands are visibly clean -- hands should then be washed with soap and water at the next available opportunity. "

Note: Researchers used two case study rural areas -- one with a high incidence of human O157 infection (the Grampian Region of NE Scotland) and the other with a relatively low incidence (North Wales) and a number of key groups such as farmers, contractors, slaughterhouses, butchers, caterers, and other rural stakeholders.

Grandparents play a bigger role in child-rearing (AP)

WASHINGTON ? America is swiftly becoming a granny state.

Less frail and more involved, today's grandparents are shunning retirement homes and stepping in more than ever to raise grandchildren while young adults struggle in the poor economy.

The newer grandparents are mainly baby boomers who are still working, with greater disposable income. Now making up 1 in 4 adults, grandparents are growing at twice the rate of the overall population and sticking close to family ? if their grandkids aren't already living with them.

Grandparents in recent decades have often filled in for absent parents who were ill or battled addiction, or were sent to prison. The latest trend of grandparent involvement, reflected in census figures released Thursday, is now being driven also by the economy and the graying U.S. population, including the 78 million boomers born between 1946 and 1964 who began turning 65 this year.

"We help out in terms of running errands, babysitting, taking the grandkids to doctors' appointments, and for back-to-school shopping," said Doug Flockhart of Exeter, N.H., listing some of the activities that he and his wife, Eileen, do for their five kids and seven grandchildren. But that's just the start.

They also pitch in with health care payments for family members due to insurance gaps, and their pace of activity has picked up substantially since their daughter, who lives three blocks away, gave birth to her first child this month. Flockhart, a retired architect, likes the family time even if he and his wife worry about their grandkids' futures. Their oldest grandchild is 16.

"It's not so much the day in and day out, it's the big picture as to how these young kids will grow up and pay for a college education and buy a house," he said. "The middle class is so much less well-off than it used to be. We've put aside some savings for them, but with seven grandchildren it can only go so far."

Flockhart's situation is increasingly common, demographers say.

"Grandparents have become the family safety net, and I don't see that changing any time soon," said Amy Goyer, a family expert at AARP. "While they will continue to enjoy their traditional roles, including spending on gifts for grandchildren, I see them increasingly paying for the extras that parents are struggling to keep up with ? sports, camps, tutoring or other educational needs, such as music lessons."

The latest numbers are based partly on separate analyses by Goyer and Peter Francese, founder of American Demographics magazine who is now a population analyst for the MetLife Mature Market Institute. Their data were supplemented with the latest 2010 census figures as well as interviews with Census Bureau and other experts.

Currently about 5.8 million children, or nearly 8 percent of all children, are living with grandparents identified as the head of household, according to 50-state census data released Thursday. That's up from 4.5 million, or 6.3 percent, who lived in such households in 2000.

Much of the increase in grandparent caregivers occurred later in the decade after the recession eliminated jobs for many younger people, surveys indicate. The 8 percent share of children now living with grandparents is the largest in at least 40 years ? and it is believed to be the largest share ever, the population experts say.

In all, there are 62.8 million grandparents in the U.S., the most ever. They are projected to make up roughly 1 in 3 adults by 2020.

Nearly half the states had increases of 40 percent or more over the last decade in the number of grandchildren living with grandparents. They were led by states such as Nevada, Utah, Idaho, Wyoming, Arizona and Kentucky, which had influxes of young families or suffered higher rates of poverty.

On the other end of the scale, New Jersey, New York, Michigan and Louisiana saw the smallest increases, less than 10 percent. Each of those states saw slower population growth overall since 2000, particularly among young people.

The District of Columbia posted a decline of more than 20 percent in grandchildren living with grandparents, a sign of growing gentrification in the nation's capital in which smaller-sized white families are replacing black families with grandparent caregivers, who are moving to suburban areas.

Francese says the stereotype of grandparents who are frail, receding and dependent is changing. He noted that unemployment among workers ages 25 to 34 last year was double that of Americans aged 55 to 64. U.S. households headed by baby boomers also commanded almost half of the nation's total household income, and are more likely to be college graduates than grandparents in previous generations.

These grandparents reject living in senior communities in favor of "aging in place" in their own homes, near family. In 2009, households ages 55 or older spent billions of dollars on infant food, clothes, toys, games, tuition and supplies for grandchildren, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

"Grandparents are supposed to be old, gray-haired people tottering around, but the vast majority are actually in the work force," said Francese, who released a paper on the topic last month. "There is not much doubt that the recent recession has brought grandparents and grandchildren together."

The government figures come as a congressional supercommittee considers possible reductions to Medicare and Social Security to achieve $1.5 trillion in federal spending cuts under the terms of the debt ceiling agreement. Up until now, lawmakers' proposals to cut the entitlement programs have met resistance from older Americans, including those 45 and older, who now make up a majority of the voting-age population.

The committee must issue its recommendations by late November, with action by Congress before year's end, or various parts of government will face automatic spending cuts.

Estella Hyde, 65, who lives near Erie, Pa., said additional government aid ? not spending cuts ? would go a long way for grandparents. She and her husband have raised their granddaughter, now 18, off and on since she was a year old, when Hyde's daughter-in-law at the time said she didn't want the burden.

Eventually the Hydes were able to adopt their granddaughter legally, which allowed her to have coverage under their health plan, but only after the couple fought through red tape and paid $10,000 in adoption fees. After a difficult childhood, her granddaughter will attend college this fall.

"It never happens in a happy situation where a son or daughter comes and says, `I need you to raise a child for me,'" said Hyde, a nursing professor who is now retired. "We were very lucky, we were able to financially take care of her and support her. But many grandparent caregivers need other sources of assistance."

In all, the states with the highest shares of children living in households headed by grandparents are in the South and West. They include Hawaii, Mississippi, Louisiana, New Mexico, South Carolina and Texas, each with at least 1 in 10 children living in grandparent households.

Among the states with high concentrations of grandparents overall ? regardless of their living arrangement ? are Maine, West Virginia, Florida, Pennsylvania, Iowa and New Hampshire, according to some estimates.

Video Marketing : Learn How To Grow Your Online Business Through ...

Video marketing, the next big thing in online marketing, is one of the fastest growing areas on the web today. Due to the power of video marketing, it might even replace text marketing eventually as the next big thing in Internet business. What do you need to do to take advantage of this amazing new advertising format and make sure that your business is at the forefront? This article will explain the many ways that you can make more money through the use of video marketing, get more conversions, and help you make a name for yourself in your particular business niche. You?ll find video marketing to be the most intelligent and enjoyable methods to market your product online. Large companies like Norwest Venture Partners, directed by Promod Haque, utilize video marketing as a part their Public Relations programs. On You Tube, NVP has published several videos featuring the company and Promod Haque. This is an excellent method for NVP to promote the successes of the firm and of their General Partners Promod Haque and Vab Goel.

Tag Your Videos Appropriately

Once you?ve taken that first step and selected your audience, you?ll need to determine how long your video should be. For instance, if you only want to create a short video clip, make sure it doesn?t go any longer than two minutes. If it?s a video ad, then 30 to 60 seconds is the max you can go for. The primary thing you need to remember when creating a video is that you have to make your point within the first 8 seconds. You?ll want to deliver your USP quickly, so don?t waste valuable time on information that won?t sell your product. Your videos should be three things: brief, lively and potent. It takes skill to create a successful video, so if you feel that your own abilities are not up to the task, you should look into hiring someone to make the video, or find a freelance artist who is willing to take on the job. Marketing with video has become extremely important to the business world and is even used by large venture capital organizations like Norwest Venture Partners and their general partner Promod Haque. As an investor, Promod Haque looks around the globe for business opportunities and video marketing is an effective way for firms to promote their most innovative technologies to NVP. Promod Haque specializes in investments in semiconductor and components, systems, software and services.

Make Sure To Inform

In the event that you intend to use Internet distribution to get the video out, make sure it will effectively drive traffic to your website. Keep in mind that there are millions of videos available over the Internet. That?s why its so important to not only include a call to action, but to also put it in the appropriate location. Viewing videos is similar to watching TV. This means you have to grab the viewers attention quickly if you want to keep them watching. Don?t place the URL to your website at the end of the video, your viewer should see the call to action early on. Instead, place it in multiple places in the video or you can have it right on the bottom, through out the video, but this can get annoying. A great eye catcher is to show the URL for 5-10 seconds and then let it fade away a few times during the video. Provided your video is a certain length, it?ll have your URL on it a certain number of times. So take your decision based on that. Also, if your call to action isn?t bolded, it won?t work out as well.

Promoting your business or yourself by using videos is one of the most ingenious ways there is to differentiate what you have from all the rest. If you still haven?t thought about adding this form of marketing to your list of promotional methods, you might want to give it a fair try. Sites such as YouTube have grown in popularity not just for their informative videos but also for the entertainment value, people all over use video searches to find what they are looking for. Overall, in the coming years, videos will become more commonplace on the internet and a great deal of marketing is going to be done through this type of video promotion. Start out on your journey with confidence; you can be sure that many endless opportunities for profit lay ahead in this increasingly popular movement called video marketing.

Report: NASA made right picks for retired shuttles (AP)

WASHINGTON ? NASA's watchdog says the space agency acted properly when it picked new homes for the retired space shuttles.

The shuttles were awarded to museums in suburban Washington, Los Angeles, Cape Canaveral, Fla., and New York.

Two losing cities ? Houston and Dayton ? had asked for an investigation, alleging political influences.

In a report released Thursday, Inspector General Paul Martin found there were no outside influences, including none from the White House. The decision making was based on attendance, population, funding and the facility.

There was a scoring error for the Air Force Museum in Dayton and it should have tied the winning cities. But NASA chief Charles Bolden told investigators that the cities he selected fit NASA's science education goals better.

PORTSMOUTH ? A internal word profession indicted of defrauding a Nevada integrate out of $2.4 million by a life word intrigue is scheduled for intervention toward ?a intensity settlement,? according to sovereign justice records.

A seven-count lawsuit filed in a U.S. District Court of Nevada alleges James Archibald of Portsmouth perpetrated a rascal with recently indicted former financial confidant Karl Hahn. The fit alleges Archibald and Hahn committed rascal and misrepresentation, rascal formed on dissimulation and omission, inattentive misrepresentation, crack of fiduciary duty, veteran misconduct, unfair improvement and disregarded Nevada?s consumer word laws.

The ground was vast sales commissions, according to sovereign prosecutors.

An sequence filed with a Nevada justice states Archibald and an profession for his purported victims are scheduled to accommodate in Chicago on Sept. 13 with ?at slightest one other celebration compared with this dispute.? The purpose of a meeting, according to justice records, is to rivet in intervention in front of a late judge.

Both sides ?wish to equivocate unnecessarily expending estimable additional sums? of income pursing a authorised case, a justice sequence states. The intervention devise was authorized Jul 21 by Judge Robert McQuaid Jr.

Archibald?s Boston attorney, Louis Ciavarra, told a Herald in Jun that his customer is not guilty, though was ?swept adult in a Karl Hahn saga.?

Once a rich investment confidant who lived in a Portsmouth mansion, Hahn was arraigned in Jun in a U.S. District Court of New Hampshire on sovereign charges alleging he ?devised a intrigue to defraud? a Portsmouth male out of $1.9 million. He?s scheduled for a Nov. 1 trial.

The Nevada fit alleges Archibald concluded to ?associate? with Hahn to sell a rich integrate ?large life word policies by reward financing.? Former neighbors, Archibald and Hahn are purported to have trafficked to Nevada in Apr 2008, when they sole life word to a integrate by ?misrepresenting? a deal, observant it would come during no risk or cost to them, while safeguarding their resources in life and after death.

?Both Hahn and Archibald settled that life word skeleton were ?complex,? though promoted themselves as experts in a packages on whom (the couple) could rely,? according to a suit.

?Jim (Archibald) and Hahn are not and never were partners or assimilated in any way,? Ciavarra formerly told a Herald. ?The plaintiffs are dual rich people with buyer?s remorse, and blamed everybody else for their decision.?

In a summer of 2009, Hahn left Deutsche Bank for a pursuit during Oppenheimer in Portsmouth and asked a integrate to pierce their word business with him, a Nevada fit alleges. When Hahn eliminated a business, it ?triggered? a default of a word loan and direct notices were sent to a integrate totaling $2.4 million.

?The send was for a purpose of permitting Archibald, Port Capital and Hahn to continue to lift out a fake life word reward financing scheme,? a fit alleges.

The integrate ?found themselves relying on Archibald, Hahn and Port Capital to extricate themselves from a conditions combined by Archibald, Hahn and Port Capital in a initial place,? a fit alleges.

Ciavarra cited Archibald?s ?years of knowledge offered life insurance? for ?some of a country?s largest insurers,? while observant a keeper for a purported victims settled Archibald ?did positively zero wrong.?

The purported victims formerly asked a Nevada sovereign justice for a jury hearing and triple damages.

California counsel David Thomas is representing a purported victims and told a Herald that Hahn was, though is no longer, a suspect in a sovereign lawsuit since Hahn?s former employer, Deutsche Bank, argued a Nevada justice didn?t have jurisdiction. Her Summer Pastime? Cancer Research

How did you hear about the Google Science Fair?
I did science fairs before, but it was mostly the ?cut paper out and paste it on a board? sort of thing. And I saw this little ad on the Google home page introducing the first ever Google online science fair. And so I thought, well, I love Google and I love science fairs, so maybe this could work for me.

What was your project?s focus?
My project was about finding a link between this protein in the cell called AMP kinase, which is an energy protein of the cell, and the development of drug resistance of ovarian cancer cells to this drug called cisplatin. Basically, we found that this protein might be playing a role in cancer cells becoming resistant to the drug.

That would actually mean that for a patient with ovarian cancer who first responded well to treatment but then came back years later with a resistant strain of the disease, if we added in an AMP kinase inhibitor, we could boost the efficiency of their drug therapy almost back up to where it was when the cells were still responding
to the drug.

What drew you to this topic?
Well, two summers ago, actually, my grandfather passed away from cancer. I had already known I wanted to do research, but I didn?t know what field, and that just kind of decided it for me. I knew I wanted to go into cancer research.

Where did you do this research?
I worked at the University of North Texas Health Science Center. It?s a graduate school for biomedical sciences in Fort Worth. I e-mailed professors there, and one accepted me. Her name is Dr. [Alakananda] Basu. She specializes in breast and ovarian cancer, so she made me do some background research. We came up with this project, and I put it all together. And she allowed me to work in her lab all summer. So I was really lucky to find her.

You spent your whole summer working on this project?
It took about three months, and then I worked a little bit on weekends, but I?m already a high schooler who doesn?t sleep. So that did not help. I spent all summer, and I spent over 40 hours in the lab every week, but it was worth every second.

Do you plan to pursue higher education in the sciences?
Yes. I want to major in biology, I hope, as an undergrad, and then my dream job would be an M.D./Ph.D., which is a medical researcher, where I could combine treating patients by being a physician with coming up with the treatments for the patients as a researcher. But if that falls through, I would love to just be a doctor and make the world just a little bit better.

Other than a scholarship award of $50,000, a free trip to the Galapagos Islands and an internship at CERN in Geneva, what will you take away from this year?s Google Science Fair?
The one thing I will always remember are the other finalists. [These 14 people are] the most incredible minds that I have ever had the pleasure of meeting. And I am sure that I will definitely be friends with a lot of these people, if not for my entire life, then definitely for a really long time.

EAST COAST CHALLENGES WEST COAST TO A ?QUAKE DOWN? | Weekly World News

WASHINGTON, DC ? East Coast residents can?t take the jabs from the West any longer. ?They?ve challenged West Cost residents to a ?quake down.?

Soon after the shaking stopped, lunch plates stopped rattling and books stopped thumping to the floor, shaken easterners could hear another sound from Tuesday?s magnitude-5.8 quake: snickering emanating from the opposite side of the continent.R

?Really all this excitement over a 5.8 quake??? Come on East Coast, we have those for breakfast out here!!!!? wrote Dennis Miller, 50, a lifelong California resident whose house in Pleasanton sits on an earthquake fault line.

He said he?s had a number of people click ?like? on his post on Facebook ? all of them from the West Coast, though.

?I haven?t heard from anyone on the East Coast because they are probably still sitting under their kitchen tables,? Miller said in an interview, with a laugh.

Miller added, ?I wouldn?t even wake up to a 5.8 if I was asleep.?

The East Coast can?t take it anymore. They have challenged the West Coast to a ?quake off.?

?Those potheads out there in California are getting annoying,? said Sal Barone of Richmond, Virginia.

NBC is organizing a simulated quake down. ?With the help of the U.S. Military, there will be a surprise ?simulated earthquake? on both the east coast and the west coast ? both at 6.4 on the richter scale. ? NBC will film the reactions and determine who can withstand the tougher shake.

?I can?t wait. ?These Californians, they run inside and hide under the bed when there?s a little drizzle, now let?s see what happens when we are on equal earthquake footing,? said Tom Flanagan of Bethesda. ??Bunch of ?whiny little quakettes out there.?

Tuesday?s quake was the East Coast?s largest since 1944. California alone has seen 35 quakes of that size since then, and since Japan?s massive 9.0 quake on March 11, that country has experienced 93 aftershocks that registered more than magnitude-6.0.

Joanne Razo, a legal assistant who lives in Washington, D.C., has lived through an earthquake in Los Angeles and said she knows that a 5.8-quake is mild by West Coast standards. But for her, the scary part was not the ground shaking but that ?this area is not equipped to handle anything like this.?

?A perverse consequence of living with the ongoing specter of catastrophe is this sense of pride,? he said.

Marcus Beer, a video game critic who moved to Los Angeles in 2002 after growing up in the seismically stable British nation of Wales, said he didn?t unleash his own smart-alecky tweet about the quake until he saw that it hadn?t caused any major damage or harm.

He said he was amused by how much media attention was being seized by a quake of a size that ? barring serious damage ? would prompt little more than a few nervous chuckles on the West Coast.

?I watched some videos of people reacting, and sorry to say, they are pretty darn funny,? wrote Rob Chapman on the CBS 5 Facebook page.

CBS 5 spoke to Veronica Cummings, of the University of California?s DC program, on Skype. She described the ?overreaction? that she witnessed.

?If you watch any type of national news, you would think that Washington, DC was a rubble of buildings,? she said.

?For me, it was just ironic that the major news centers being based on the East Coast finally got hit by what we consider a temblor and it?s, ?Oh my God!?? Beer said. ?We get those all the time, and we?re so used to them.?

Some East Coasters seemed to understand the eye-rolling from the West Coast. On Foursquare, a service that lets people tell others where they?ve been, users all over the East Coast checked in to made-up locations such as ?Earthquakepocalypse,? just as they checked in to ?Snowpocalypse? during winter storms.

Sarah Atkinson, a manager for a marketing firm in San Jose, was unimpressed by all the excitement.

?5.9? That?s what us Californians use to stir our coffee with,? she tweeted. ?And she posted some pictures to prove how ?bad? California was:

Here?s how Californians see the ?DC Earthquake Devastation?:

Californians were ROTFL when the saw of people fleeing buildings?the exact opposite of what you?re supposed to do in a quake.

?Hey East Coast, the entire West Coast is mocking you right now,? tweeted Todd Walker, an Anchorage TV anchorman.

Well? when the Quake Down happens? let?s see who is left standing!
