Installing Rear Parking Sensors | Automotive Orto

Parking may be a difficult task for several drivers. Most of the time drivers notice it tough to park in reverse. There are cases once you cannot see what?s behind or cannot estimate how you must move the vehicle. Even the slightest mistake in parking will value expensive repairs or harm to different properties. This emphasizes the importance of parking tools which will warn you whether or not you continue to have area to maneuver. Specifically, rear parking sensors offer out warning signals when your vehicle is on the point of hit one thing. the subsequent sections define how you?ll install this beneficial tool.

Decide on Location

Find out where you must install your sensor units. live your vehicle?s bumper length and divide in half or quarters. this relies on the amount of sensors you may install. Mark the middle for every half or quarter measurement you bought. verify the curve and form of the bumper. These parking sensors ought to be in an exceedingly straight direction before they?ll work properly. Sensors angling in several directions have a distinct orientation of objects so sending you confusing signals when parking.

You should make sure the sensor fits the bumper comfortably. Its position ought to be around 24 inches from the bottom. Use a marking pencil to mark the locations of the sensor. Use double-sided tape to position the sensor to the marked space. Check the product?s packaging for installation directions or recommendations on the adhesive to use.

Connect and take a look at

Test whether or not the sensor?s position works. Connect the wires of the sensor to the management box. Build a affiliation linking the management box to the parking lights and therefore the sensors. scan your vehicle manual for directions on the way to do that. differing kinds of auto models need a distinct set of wiring specifications.

For testing, raise somebody to show on the automotive and switch the parking lights on. attempt to move differing kinds of objects (in varying sizes) in front of the rear bumper. this can tell you if the sensors are operating properly. you must alter the placements of the sensor to create positive they furnish off sufficient warning when parking. Once you puzzled out the successful affiliation, pull the plugs of the sensors. Disconnect the management box from the automotive battery. this can shield your vehicle from voltage shocks.

Actual Installation

Installation kits go along with drill bits you must use to line up the sensors accordingly. confer with the installation directions for the amount of holes to drill. you must stop from time to time when drilling to wash the metal shards. Cleaning the shards can facilitate forestall any unnecessary scratches or marks on your bumper.

Use a drill and drill-buffing bit to smoothen the realm. Place a parking sensor head in every drill hole. you?ll place the sensor wires through the vehicle?s trunk to avoid crowding. you?ll additionally install different parking tools other than the sensors. for example, you?ll embody a reverse parking camera for higher read.

Looking For Home Security Systems? - ONLINE BUSINESS TIPS

The requirement for home security systems may be contained in all societies on earth, plus it still persists. Historically, door locks as well as other simpler devices were used to make sure security of homes and businesses, now, newer home security systems can be obtained. In the present circumstances of lawlessness and turbulence, home alarm systems along with other security systems make sure the satisfaction for the user, that is integral for fulfillment and progress. In thisarticle, a discussion of security monitoring systems and an analysis of why and how they ought to be utilized by home and business people is presented.

Let?s first establish the requirement for using home alarms as well as other security systems. Home security systems ensure that the valuables from the user are safe somewhat, and most importantly, they make sure that no intruder can enter in the home or business premises without stimulating the home alarms. Which means that the consumer can continue his use the calmness and satisfaction he needs. Home alarm systems work with such inbuilt mechanisms that they are capable of track most, if not completely, intrusions to the home.

The mechanism of operation of home alarms varies, therefore does their efficiency in detection of intruders. Some home alarms use motion detectors, as the better ones usually use sound, infra-red wavers, or lasers for detection. The keypads of these alarm systems tend to be attached to entrance or back doors of houses, but it?s of the same quality to have them installed elsewhere too, from which they can be controlled quicker. Most alarms available nowadays for homes have extra options of alarm monitoring from the user. These options enable the user to customize his alarm based on the degree of security he needs. For users surviving in areas with relatively high crime rates, the security level needed is quite high.

Most firms which offer home security plans give you a complete package for home security, which includes not only the highly sophisticated burglar alarms, but also fire alarms. Having alarms systems not just for home security from external threat, also for internal threats like fire, allows an individual to be completely free of worries about home security.

Today, home security packages from a variety of firms and of many types can be obtained. These types include wired and wireless home security systems, and every of those types carries its very own advantages. Any individual customer must look at the relative prices with the different home security packages, their effectiveness, positives and negatives of numerous systems, the degree of security he requires along with other external factors before installing a specific system of security at his home. In this way, he?ll be in a position to pick the best security package for sale in his affordability range.

New cancer drugs: Fitter, happier, more productive? Or not ...

It?s known as ?targeted? therapy, and it?s the holy grail of cancer research these days. If you listen to its most vocal proponents, it?s the path towards ?personalized medicine? that improves survival with much lower toxicity, in which, instead of using the hammer that is chemotherapy, precisely targets specific molecular abnormalities that drive cancer growth. With the advent of the revolution in genomics that has transformed cancer research over the last decade, including the petabytes of sequence and gene expression data that pour out of universities and research institutes, the promise of one day being able to a patient?s tumor, determining the specific derangements in its genome, gene expression, and protein expression that drive its uncontrolled proliferation, and finding drugs to target these abnormalities seems more tantalizingly close than ever. Indeed, it seems so close that even dubious practitioners, such as Stanislaw Burzynski, have jumped on the bandwagon, co-opting the terms used by real oncologists and real cancer researchers to sell ?personalized gene-targeted cancer therapy,? which in their hands are really no more than a parody of efforts to synthesize the enormous quantity of genomic data each patient?s tumor possesses and figure out how best to take advantage of it, a ?personalized genomic therapy for dummies,? if you will.

That?s not to say that there aren?t roadblocks to realizing this vision. The problems to be overcome are substantial, and I?ve discussed them multiple times before. For example, just a couple of weeks ago I discussed an example of just what it takes to apply these new genomic techniques to an individual patient. The resources required are staggering, and, more problematic, there often aren?t any single ?magic bullet? molecular pathways identified that can be targeted with existing drugs. The case I discussed was a fortunate man indeed in that such a pathway was identified, but most tumors are driven by many derangements in growth control, metabolism, migration, and the other hallmarks of malignancy described by Robert Weinberg. Worse, in many cases we don?t even have drugs that can attack many of the abnormalities that drive cancer progression. Then there?s the issue of tumor heterogeneity, which comes about because cancer is as good example of a disease as I can think of in which evolution due to natural selection results in incredible differences in the cancer cells in one part of the tumor compared to other parts of the tumor or in the tumor metastases. A ?targeted? therapy that targets the genetic abnormalities in one part of the cancer might well fail to target the genetic abnormalities driving another part of the tumor.

These, and many other reasons, are why we haven?t ?cured cancer? yet.

Of course, the main promise of the new targeted therapies, besides more precisely targeting the actual genetic abnormalities that drive the growth of specific tumors, is decreased toxicity. Whereas cytotoxic chemotherapy is like a blunderbuss that pummels and poisons cells, both normal and cancerous (it just poisons cancer cells more, which is why it works), ?targeted? agents are frequently portrayed as ?smart bombs? that attack only the cancer cells and produce little, if any, collateral damage. But is that true? There?s a whole lot of hype, but thus far the reality has been disappointing. If a new study just published online in the Journal of Clinical Oncology by a group at the Princess Margaret Hospital and University in Toronto, the answer is ?probably not.? The study?s title pretty much sums up the findings: The Price We Pay for Progress: A Meta-Analysis of Harms of Newly Approved Anticancer Drugs. However, as you will see, the way the results of the study (Niraula et al) are being reported are not exactly in line with what the study found. In other words, this study finds something that seems unexpected, part of which is a bit unexpected, most of which is not.

A bit of background is in order, and the introduction of the paper is a good place to start:

Although virtually all new drugs are tested in early-phase clinical trials designed to evaluate toxicity and tolerance, these trials are small and can detect only common toxicities. Most large RCTs are primarily not designed to detect differences in quality of life or toxicity of treatment between the study arms and are usually inadequately powered to do so. Furthermore, some anticancer drugs are approved on the basis of smaller, nonrandomized, unblinded clinical trials5 in which detection of toxicity can be severely impaired. Rare but potentially serious toxicities may not be detected in RCTs owing to a selection of patients with high performance status and minimal comorbidity or because of relatively short follow-up. The quality of reporting toxicity in RCTs has been criticized following evidence that some toxicities may be detected but inadequately reported.3,6 Increased treatment-related mortality associatedwith bevacizumab,7 increased cardiovascular morbidity of aromatase inhibitors,8,9 and increased risk of cardiopulmonary arrest with cetuximab10 were all either undetected or unreported at the time of drug approval but were described postmarketing. Therefore, efforts to monitor for toxicities after completing pivotal phase III RCTs are essential.11 The US Food and Drug Administration has encouraged a systematic approach to the collection and reporting of toxicity.12 Until such measures are implemented, there will continue to be concerns about failure of detection and reporting of serious and fatal toxicities.

In essence, the approval process for cancer drugs suffer from the same limitations as the approval process for all drugs does. The phase III studies used to support approval, although large, are not large enough to identify uncommon complications and toxicities or to do a fine analysis of differences in quality of life. Unfortunately, these sorts of issues are often not identified until approved drugs go into wide usage. Post marketing surveillance studies are useful for this purpose, but it?s a bit hit or miss whether such studies are done. Because anticancer agents, even targeted therapies, are directed at critical signaling pathways that control cell replication, death, mobility, and other key processes common in all cells, even targeted therapies are likely to produce at least some toxicity. Basically, all drug approval is a delicate balancing act between doing enough studies with enough patients to ensure that the drug tested is safe and effective versus cost and the time it takes to do the necessary studies.

What the authors hypothesized is that the experimental arms of studies used to support the approval of new agents would be associated with a higher rate of significant toxicity. The specific toxicities studied included treatment-related deaths, any toxicity severe enough that treatment had to be halted, and grade 3 and 4 adverse events (AEs). Grade 3 AEs include ?symptoms causing inability to perform usual social and functional activities,? while grade 4 AEs are potentially life-threatening and result in ?symptoms causing inability to perform basic self-care functions or medical or operative intervention indicated to prevent permanent impairment, persistent disability, or death.? To test their hypothesis, the authors identified 38 RCTs used to support approval of a drug for a cancer indication between January 2000 and December 2010, specifically the phase III randomized clinical trials used to support FDA approval of these drugs. A meta-analysis was performed, and correlations were made between the odds ratios for the three primary endpoints (treatment-related deaths, AEs resulting in treatment discontinuation, and grade 3/4 AEs) associated with the new drug and hazard ratios for overall survival (OS) and progression-free survival (PFS) associated with these drugs.

What the authors found can be boiled down fairly easily. Compared with control groups, the odds ratio (OR) for treatment-associated toxic deaths was elevated (OR, 1.40; 95% CI, 1.15 to 1.70; P peripheral neuropathy is a common complication of taxanes, so much so that many women I?ve operated on who underwent such therapy complain about numbness in their fingers, and one of the main drugs included in the meta-analysis was docetaxel (trade name Taxotere); so I?m not terribly surprised that this toxicity would come to the fore.

There are a number of other issues that were brought up with respect to this trial as well. The results I?ve just described were the overall results. The authors had several pre-planned subgroup analyses, and the results were a mixture of the aforementioned surprising and unsurprising results. The first surprising result is that the authors compared ? targeted drugs directed against a specific molecular target (specifically, the target population to be treated was selected by presence of a biomarker) versus drugs that are less specific (unselected target population, not based on presence of a biomarker). In this classification, docetaxel would be less specific because it is a general microtubule inhibitor that interferes with cell division. Its use is thus not chosen on the basis of an existing biomarker. In contrast, drugs like Tamoxifen or aromatase inhibitors would be considered ?targeted? because they target estrogen signaling and are therefore only used in women whose cancers make the estrogen receptor. Similarly Herceptin would be considered a targeted agent because it targets HER2 and is only used in women whose cancers make this particular oncogene protein product.

The findings were a bit unexpected in that, targeted therapies had a higher OR for the three end points than the ?less targeted? agents. However, I have a bit of a problem with this. Here?s a table describing the OR of the various endpoints for these two groups, with the 95% confidence intervals (CIs) in parentheses below each OR:

Group Toxic death

Treatment discontinuation

Grade 3/4 AEs

Specific targeted agents

Less specific agents

1.40

(1.22 to 1.60)

Notice that, for the specific targeted agents, the ORs are not statistically significantly different than 1.0 for toxic deaths and treatment discontinuation, but for the less specific agents, the ORs are statistically significantly greater than 1.0 for two out of the three endpoints. So, while it?s true that the risk of grade 3/4 AEs is higher for the targeted agents, the ORs for everything else are not. Personally, I?d call this a wash, or even potentially an indication that the less targeted therapies produce more AEs, as one would expect.

The next thing that the authors did that seemed to get lost in the news reports discussing this study. For instance:

The study showed the newer cancer drugs caused significantly more side effects, and more treatment-related deaths, than their older counterparts. ?You?ve got to consider both efficacy and toxicity in the picture,? said Susan Ellenberg, who has studied drug side effects at the University of Pennsylvania?s Perelman School of Medicine in Philadelphia.

She said the analysis wasn?t so surprising, and isn?t ?a big alarm.?

While it is correct that this isn?t a ?big alarm,? reporting this study in a blanket fashion as showing these newer drugs as causing significantly more side effects is simplifying the results of this study way too much. The reason, I would posit, comes from another pre-planned subgroup analysis that the authors did:

Agents were classified into four subgroups: targeted agent alone versus placebo or best supportive care (subgroup A); targeted agent alone versus nontargeted systemic anticancer therapy (subgroup B); targeted agent combined with nontargeted systemic anticancer therapy versus nontargeted systemic anticancer therapy alone (subgroup C); and chemotherapeutic agents (subgroup D). We compared the rates of treatment-related death, treatment discontinuation, and grade 3/4 AEs in each of these subgroups. In a separate analysis, we pooled the odds of hematologic and nonhematologic toxicities in each of the subgroups.

Overall, the finding of this subgroup analysis for the three endpoints of the study was described in the discussion thusly by the authors:

Our analysis shows that most newly approved anticancer drugs are associated with increased odds of toxic death, treatment discontinuation, and severe AEs compared with the standard treatment received by controls. There was an overall increase in the odds of toxic death, treatment discontinuation, and grade 3/4 AEs with the use of new agents versus the control groups except when targeted agents alone were compared with chemotherapy in the control arm. When individual toxicities were evaluated independently, the odds were increased to a greater extent for nonhematologic than for hematologic toxicities with the use of experimental agents compared with the controls.

In other words, when these new agents go head-to-head with existing cancer therapies, the OR for serious AEs is not elevated in the experimental group, while in groups for which the new agent was either tested versus placebo or best supportive care or combined with nontargeted anticancer therapies or with cancer chemotherapy the addition of the new drugs increased the chance of significant toxicity. This is about as expected a result as I can think of. Of course a new agent is likely to produce more toxicity than placebo; that is, if it?s an active drug. Of course adding a new agent to existing agents, be they traditional chemotherapy or other nontargeted agents will increase toxicity! It?s a general principle that an active drug will be more toxic than placebo and that adding another drug to an existing mix of drugs is likely to produce more toxicity! In fact, I?d be surprised if the investigators didn?t find that.

That?s the message that?s being lost in how this particular study is being reported. Now don?t get me wrong here. This study, admittedly, is disappointing. However, it?s disappointing not because it shows that the newer drugs are so much ?more toxic,? but rather because it suggests that, contrary to the hope and the hype, the newer drugs are probably not less toxic than existing drugs. Actually, the study doesn?t exactly show that. The numbers of studies looking at head-to-head comparisons of new drugs with established treatment regimens was too small. It does, however, strongly suggest that newer agents at the very least are not that much less toxic than existing drugs and might be more. It also confirms the long-known dictum in pharmacology that the more drugs you give at the same time the higher the chance of interactions and toxicity. Newer, ?targeted? drugs are not immune to that basic principle of pharmacology.

Another finding that seems surprising on the surface but really isn?t is that the observed toxicity of newly approved drugs did not correlate with how much they were able to increase OS or PFS. There is a misconception common even among doctors that the price we pay for more effective anticancer drugs is more toxicity, but that?s not necessarily true, and this study is simply more evidence to that effect. Another implication of this observation is simply to reinforce the point that we have to weigh toxicities very carefully versus incremental improvements in OS and PFS that result from adding new drugs to our cancer treatment regimens. There often comes a point where patients judge that the additional toxicity is not worth it for the amount of potential benefit that such drugs provide. In any case, it should not be surprising that toxicity and efficacy are largely independent properties of such drugs. As the authors themselves point out, efficacy is determined by the sensistivity of tumor cells and their microenvironment to the drug, while toxicity is more dependent on drug metabolism and clearance, as well as comorbidities, organ function, and concurrent medications, among other things.

What needs to be remembered about the new generation of more targeted therapies is that, unless they are used in patients whose tumors have the intended molecular target and are thus likely to be sensitive to the medication, the chances of benefit decline while the chances of toxicity increase. That is why, for instance, we do not give Herceptin to patients whose tumors do not make HER2 and do not use Tamoxifen or aromatase inhibitors in patients whose breast cancer is ER(-). For us to realize the maximum benefit at the lowest cost in terms of toxicity from these new medications, in addition to biomarkers that predict response (such as the aforementioned ER and HER2 markers) but biomarkers that also predict toxicity.

Finally, it?s important to note that, as incredible and copious as it is, all this genomic data doesn?t help us that much?yet. The reason is that we don?t yet know what to do with this ?firehose? of a data stream, how to apply the data contained therein to guiding patient care in order to cure more patients and prolong the survival more of those who cannot be cured. I actually believe that one day we will have the tools and knowledge to do that, such that I envision a day when we will use tumor biopsies and blood to construct comprehensive genomic, transcriptomic, and proteomic profiles of individual patient tumors and use them to target the molecular derangements that drive them. However, I am under no illusion that reaching that day will be easy, cheap, or without other cost. Studies like Niraula et al keep us humble.

Samsung Galaxy Nexus (Unlocked)

Finally, an unlocked smartphone we can get excited about. The Samsung Galaxy Nexus ($349 direct from Google) is tempting to begin with, since you can use any AT&T or T-Mobile SIM card, even prepaid or monthly ones, plus it will work overseas. And the price is very low for an unlocked phone, which typically costs $500 to $600, leading us to believe Google is subsidizing it somehow. But the Galaxy Nexus ?is also in the unique position of being the only phone running Android 4.1 "Jelly Bean" (Free, 4.5 stars) right now, and it's the only?phone you can buy that's guaranteed to get quick Android OS updates. As such, even though some other phones now beat it on pure hardware specs, the unlocked Galaxy Nexus is our Editors' Choice for unlocked smartphones.

Design and Screen
Measuring 5.33 by 2.67 by 0.35 inches (HWD) and weighing 4.76 ounces, the Galaxy Nexus is constructed of all dark gray plastic with the exception of the glass screen. The textured back panel is pleasantly grippy, although it's also hard plastic and not a soft-touch material. The phone isn't particularly eye-catching, but it's finely crafted nonetheless, and the unlocked version is a shade thinner than the CDMA model, which is welcome. The left side holds a volume rocker switch, while the right side houses the Power button and the three-dot docking connector.

The 4.65-inch Super AMOLED screen offers full 720p (1,280-by-720-pixel) resolution. Fonts look exceedingly sharp and crisp. Colors are vibrant, and you get deep blacks. But solid whites looks like pale gray. And like older AMOLED screens, the lowest brightness setting is still pretty bright, which is an issue when using the phone in a dark room. Used within its limits, though, it's still a beautiful screen, but the state of the art has moved forward a bit.?Typing on the screen in both portrait and landscape mode is a pleasure. There's plenty of room to work with, and Jelly Bean's improved predictive text puts it on an even keel with iOS 5.1.?

Connectivity and Voice Quality
The unlocked Galaxy Nexus is a quad-band EDGE (850/900/1800/1900 MHz) and quintuple band HSPA+ 21 (850/900/1700/1900/2100 MHz) device with 802.11b/g/n Wi-Fi. It supports HSPA+ 21 speeds on both AT&T and T-Mobile networks here and overseas. It works with regular mini-SIMs (not micro); I tested the Nexus with an AT&T SIM, which worked perfectly.?Inside there's NFC, a gyroscope and compass, and a barometer in addition to the typical accelerometer and proximity and light sensors.

Unfortunately, you're not going to see the same data speeds with this phone as you would with an LTE or even HSPA+ 42 device?and frankly, we've seen HSPA+ 21 devices that test faster than they do here. In a series of tests, the unlocked Galaxy Nexus with an AT&T SIM averaged just 800Kbps to 1200Kbps down, and roughly 100 to 130Kbps up, with 230ms ping times, thanks to a combination of spotty reception quality and the slower data radio. That's decidedly 3G, even when testing outside in midtown Manhattan. We'll chalk it up to a bad test day for AT&T, but even with clear sailing you'd be hard pressed to top 3Mbps down.

Voice calls sounded great, though. Callers sounded clear in the earpiece, with plenty of volume, and transmissions through the microphone were crisp and detailed. I heard a good amount of street noise through the mic, but my voice always cut through loud and clear above it.?Calls sounded fine through a Jawbone Era Bluetooth headset ($129, 4 stars). Voice dialing worked perfectly over Bluetooth using Android's stock voice dialer, which you can also trigger from a headset. The speakerphone is pretty weak, both for calls and alert sounds; I barely heard the alarm when I tested it, and it was set to maximum volume. The 1750mAh battery is slightly smaller than what you get with the CDMA versions; we're testing battery life and will update this review as soon as we have a result.

Planning for a family holiday trip? Very nice idea, indeed! However, it is necessary to sit with all the members who will be joining the group and ask for their suggestions. Also, it is important to fetch information about the destination that is finalized for spending activity holiday trip. There are plenty of beautiful and stunning destinations within Europe. But, what about planning for something different? Enough of urbanization, isn't it? How about some rural experience? Don't underestimate villages. To enjoy natural and green environment, rural locales are far ahead to urban areas.

Spending family activity holidays in Abisko can be quite wonderful experience to avail. Abisko is a small village situated within the northern part of Sweden. As per 2005 survey, the total number of local inhabitants within this village is around 90 approx. However, the village is considered to be a popular tourist destination because of two major spots: National Park & Aurora Station.

It is a calm and quiet place that is ideal for family holidays. Tourists can move around here and there without facing those large crowded streets or too much road traffic. Pollution free environment helps in enjoying some fresh intake of oxygen. Birds keep on singing from early morning till late evening. It's really a wonderful experience while staying within this village. And during the trip, a night's stay at Aurora Station is must. The amazing galactic display of natural colors in the sky during late night hours is quite thrilling. Since Abisko falls within polar region, such a galactic collision of atom with energetic particles can be observed. Such happening takes place every night. And there is another advantage. Abisko mostly experiences clear blue sky all round the year. So, tourists mostly get the opportunity to observe the amazing collision of particles taking place within galaxy.

Religion linked to obesity: study | Emerald Health | Fitness and ...

RELIGION may turn a devotee into many things, devoted, angelical or satanical ? but apparently it could also make one fat.

Children and teens are weighed down by media pressure to have the ideal body.

Brenda Strong

RELIGION may turn a devotee into many things, devoted, angelical or satanical - but apparently it could also make one fat.

That is the gist of research findings from a study conducted by Southern Cross University and the University of New England.

The study looked into the relationship between religious beliefs and obesity.

From analysing the data of more than 9000 adults, the study found Baptist men had a higher body mass index compared to non-religious males.

BMI is an approximation of a person's body fat using measurements of height and weight.

"We observed that some religious denominations, namely Baptist and Catholic men and other Christian women had, on average, higher BMIs," the study stated.

"We also observed that non-Christian women, on average, had lower BMIs."

The study found no evidence of a relationship between religious attendance and BMI among women.

But Dr Michael Kortt, of the Southern Cross University Business School, said he found a negative relationship between how important a woman rates religion and their BMI.

"Perhaps this finding reflects that the importance women attach to religion may help to control excessive eating," he said.

Dr Kortt said the study was limited in the conclusions it could draw about the causality between a person's weight and their religious denomination.

"Further research is required to fully understand the influence that religion may exert on BMI and what role religious organisations can be play in helping to combat the Australian obesity epidemic," he said.

Microsoft teams up with shopping search engine for HTML5 digital catalogs

Microsoft teams up with shopping search engine for HTML5 digital catalogs

Dead tree product catalogs -- dated. Fortunate, then, at least for Mother Earth, that Microsoft's unveiled the results of its team-up with retail-focused search engine TheFind, several web-based Glimpse catalogs, offering the visual pizazz of a retail magazine without the carbon hangover. Injecting Redmond's HTML5 know-how into the shopping hub's catalog and social apps, it distills those functions into the single site. Stores including Brooks Brothers and Lands' End have already offered up their collections in the web store, but Techcrunch reckons the venture needs a little more work. The images appear to be little too compressed and blurred in the new format, while the detail view directs users to social network sharing rather than a product's description. But with Microsoft already offering the HTML5 juice that powers the online app for free, someone else might improve on the company's groundwork.

Ex-Philippine leader Arroyo wins bail

A Philippine court on Wednesday granted ex-president Gloria Arroyo bail, saying the charge of vote fraud for which she has been detained for eight months is weak.

The Pasay City regional trial court, which is hearing the case, said Arroyo could be released from the military hospital where she is being detained as soon as she posted bail of one million pesos ($23,800).

"The court believes that the prosecution failed to establish with the required quantum of proof, that conspiracy exists on the part of accused Arroyo," said the court's bail order, which was released to the media.

"Accordingly, accused Gloria Macapagal Arroyo is allowed to post bail for her provisional liberty in the amount of one million pesos."

However the court said she could not leave the country.

Arroyo, 65, was arrested at an exclusive hospital shortly after immigration authorities blocked her at Manila airport while trying to leave the country in November.

Arroyo was charged with "electoral sabotage", a crime punishable with life in jail, for allegedly conspiring with a feared political warlord to rig the 2007 senatorial elections.

Her successor, Benigno Aquino, had vowed to have her brought to justice for many acts of corruption he alleged she committed during her nine years in office that ended in 2010.

Arroyo has also been charged with corruption for approving an allegedly graft-tainted contract to set up a national government broadband system as well as siphoning off $8 million in state lottery funds.

One of Arroyo's lawyers, Ferdinand Topacio, told AFP that courts where these other two cases were being heard had not issued any order that she be detained.

Topacio said Arroyo's family would pay the bail for the vote fraud case immediately.

"We do not see any other legal obstacles that would prevent her from walking (free) today. We expect her to be home today," Topacio told AFP.

Spokesmen for Aquino said a comment on the developments would be issued later Wednesday.

Did Chick-fil-A Pretend to Be a Teenage Girl on Facebook? (Updated) [Chick-Fil-A]

Chick-fil-A, home of chicken-loving bigots, is in the middle of a PR nightmare. After Chick-fil-A's COO admitted to being anti-gay, the Jim Henson Company (bless their heart) pulled their toys from Chick-fil-A's kids meals. Only Chick-fil-A claimed the toys were pulled because of a "possible safety issue". That, of course, is a complete lie. A lie that the company may be propagating with fake Facebook accounts of Chick-fil-a sympathists. More »

Family near former dam fights to keep home | Consumer | Eugene ...

NEAR WHITE SALMON, Wash. - It was one of the most amazing displays of the power of water.

When workers punched a tunnel through the bottom of the century-old Condit Dam near White Salmon, Wash. last October water exploded downstream in a White Salmon River canyon at more than 11,000 cubic feet per second.

Behind the dam the now former Northwestern Lake emptied like a bath tub with the drain plug pulled, and the shoreline around the lake started crumbling away into the river. Thousands of tons of clay and sediment that built up over the past hundred-plus years just disappeared.

Several homes on the lake began to move as the earth below them disappeared, according to the owner of the land where the homes sit.

PacifiCorp, which rents the land to the homeowners, has condemned at least two homes and threatens to condemn another, because the company says the houses are in danger of sliding into the river.

The company's spokesman, Tom Gauntt, summed it up in four words: "It's just a safety issue," he told KATU. Gauntt went on to say, "We just want to make sure that nothing is going to happen to the structure or anyone in the structure."

A family that has owned one of the homes for almost 40 years doesn't believe their house is in jeopardy. They say the home and the property held up after the dam was breached and even after one of the wettest winters on record. Lance Cyphers told KATU's Thom Jensen, "We got hit hard with water (during the winter and spring) without redirecting any of it, and I think we're in good shape since we made it through that."

Cyphers, his father and his sister are now in a legal fight with PacifiCorp to save their home. They say they have been requesting documents from PacifiCorp that proves the home is in danger for more than eight months, but they say PacifiCorp has not provided a shred of paper as proof. Lance says, "They're a large corporation - and we're a small guy. You know? And - it's hard to know if you're getting the truth out of them."

The Cyphers family hired a geotechnical company named Terra Firma to do its own research. A staff member who secured other homes in danger behind the former dam says the Cypher home can be saved.

Chris Gordon says bedrock is only 10 to 15 feet below the home and that his workers can tie the foundation right into the bedrock. Gordon told KATU, "We're going to drive right down into the bedrock itself - and tie right into it." He said other homes, which have already been shored-up were in much more peril.

The Cyphers say it's worth the effort. Krista Lee Cyphers says there are too many memories to just give up the home, "It's hard to put into words what it means to us."

She added, "After all of the blood, sweat and tears that we put into this place - to not - to just lay down and let them have it would be foolish."

Lance and Krista's father, Lawrence Cyphers, told KATU, "I want the cabin fixed. I want to stay here. I've been coming up here all my life."

Lance says it was always the plan to keep the home in the family for generations to come. As he put it, "I want to save this place for the great grandkids that I am never going to meet."

The Cyphers have become suspicious, wondering why PacifiCorp wants their home. They asked if there could be an ulterior motive.

PacifiCorp's spokesman says it's just a safety issue, and that's it. He told KATU that experts determined the home wasn't safe, not PacfiCorp managers. Gauntt says, "The engineers and the geo-tech folks; that's their business to make those kinds of determinations of, you know, can this safely stay where it is."

The Cyphers say they?re still waiting for the proof from those experts, and they will continue to fight for their home.

Cleaning conflict? What happens when roommates, romantic partners have different levels of tolerance for housework left undone?

ScienceDaily (July 24, 2012) ? One area that can contribute to relational satisfaction between romantic partners or roommates can be division of household labor. Studies have shown that women traditionally do more in the household.

While the differences often vary based on the selected study, the amounts are disproportionate. Sarah Riforgiate, assistant professor of communication studies at Kansas State University, wanted to know why those differences exist. She collaborated with Jess Alberts and Paul Mongeau, professors of human communication at Arizona State University, to examine the issue.

The idea originated seemingly unintentionally. Alberts was leisurely reading about ants and bees and discovered that entomologists have found that insects have different threshold levels of tolerance for uncompleted tasks. If bees with different threshold levels are paired together, the bee that is most disturbed with a low honey level has been found to work harder, sometimes working itself to death. Riforgiate's master's thesis and dissertation tried to determine if such thresholds exist in human relationships and what the effects are as a result. She examined same-sex roommates and found that, unsurprisingly, different thresholds have detrimental effects on relationships.

"If we have different threshold levels, we're more likely to have lower perceived relational satisfaction," Riforgiate said. "And we're much more likely to have conflict."

Differing threshold levels negatively impact the idea of task divergence and gratitude as well, she said. When a romantic couple or roommates have differing threshold levels, the person with the lower tolerance level will often become bothered and complete tasks more promptly. Repeated instances of this behavior can lead to those tasks being regarded as the person's job.

"Then we no longer need to be grateful for our partner's work or compensate because it's their job," Riforgiate said.

Practical implications stem from the study's results. Special considerations might help in pairing roommates or assist couples in having important conversations before living together, Riforgiate said. Riforgiate's team hopes to aid in this process by developing explicit communication strategies to improve relationships. She said a failure to complete a specific task is not always what it seems.

"If they don't notice it's a problem, it's not always simply because they're lazy," Riforgiate said. "We make really negative attributes about people who we live with -- roommates, romantic partners -- that are not helpful in our relationship and may actually have nothing to do with what's really going on."

The team considered several other factors in their research. The theory known as the integrative theory of the division of domestic labor accounts for biological differences between the sexes that would influence the completion of certain tasks. These differences go beyond sex roles, according to Riforgiate.

"Women have a slightly better sense of smell," Riforgiate said. "Men and women have a different number of rods and cones in their eyes. Men are better at seeing movement, and women are better at seeing color and texture. These small biological differences can contribute to differences in threshold levels."

Prior theories do an inadequate job of accounting for those differences, according to Riforgiate.

The team arrived at its results by sampling large introductory level communications classes. Students were sampled to ensure they met the necessary qualifications. The qualifying students predominately lived in apartments or residence halls and their average age was 19 or 20.

Riforgiate hopes future studies will examine different intervention strategies with mixed-sex couples. She also hopes to implement the team's findings into an effort of better selecting college roommates. But Riforgiate knows that communication will not be the sole method of fixing relational issues.

"In past nontheoretical studies, communication has improved relationships, but it hasn't changed the allocation in a positive way," Riforgiate said. "I think we need to understand what is going on. That's why I've spent a lot of time determining if this theory is holding up.

Riforgiate says the topic of study is central to the success of relationships.

"I think it has great application and it's certainly worth studying," she said. "Our hope is that once we understand what we're studying that we can really see what types of communication make a difference."
