Ford Escape SUVs in safety recall

Ford has been forced to recall thousands of Escape SUVs

Ford has recalled thousands of its brand-new Escape SUVs due to a manufacturing fault that could cause the engine to set on fire.

The carmaker told American and Canadian customers to stop driving the vehicles after it emerged they contain faulty fuel lines that had been "mechanically scored" or damaged on the outside during the manufacturing process.

A TI Group Automotive Systems plant in Indiana manufactured the lines, which pose a risk of splitting when pushed over a connector fitting, meaning there is a risk of fuel leaking and potentially igniting.

TI Automotive is "working with Ford to identify root cause and resolve the issue", its spokesman Frank Buscemi said.

The problem affects only 2013 Escapes with 1.6-litre, four-cylinder engines and customers have been told to contact dealerships, who will pick up the Escape and drop off a loan car.

Meanwhile, motorists in the UK who have been following the events across the Atlantic might have been prompted to ensure they always have effective breakdown cover in place to protect against unexpected mechanical failure.
