The agreement on behalf of the institute was made through Yissum, the technology transfer company of the Hebrew University. The program is designed to fund promising research that can lead to creating improved new health-care products, with the goal of having teams apply for follow-on funding through Drexel?s Coulter Translational Research Partnership program endowment or from other sources of translational research funding.

?We believe this research partnership to be a wonderful opportunity to further strengthen our relationships and expand our scientific partnership in funding exciting and promising new joint projects that hopefully will lead in the future to potential improved imaging and therapeutic treatments,? said Simon Benita, a professor and head of Hebrew University?s School of Pharmacy.

Benita said the partnership encourages diversity and creative thinking.?Coming from different cultures, disciplines and perspectives, new ideas are inevitable and more possibilities abound,? he said.

Health conditions the two organizations plan to focus on in the second year of the collaboration include multiple sclerosis, epilepsy, asthma and skin cancer.

?This is a natural partnership,? said Dr. Banu Onara, director of Drexel?s School of Biomedical Engineering, Science and Health Systems. ?Drexel and The Institute for Drug Research have complementary strengths and together we can push forward more live-saving technological innovations in health care than either one of us could have accomplished alone.?
