Winnebago County's finance committee approves a measure that could reduce our electric bills.
Committee members also discussed and agreed to hire more employees to shrink the jail population.
The committee spent just more than an hour discussing an idea to combine people in the county into shopping groups and lower the price of electricity for everyone.
Plus members okayed using the county's one percent sales tax to hire people in the state's attorney's office. The goal is to speed up prosecutions and cut down on the amount of time people spend in jail.
Winnebago County Finance and Administration Committee Chairman Ted Biondo explains how aggregating power works.
"We will join with a number of counties and municipalities to try to get electricity at a group rate, and maybe save up to 20% on each of the residential and commercial electric bills."
He says response to the measure has been positive and should pass when it shows up on primary ballots in March of 2012.
"It can be as high as 20% or 50% of your electric bill saved so I think it will have overwhelming support."
County Chairman Scott Christiansen likes the idea of saving money and says there are options for folks who don't want to take part.
"Even if the referendum were to pass if there is a problem people have the option to opt out"
The county also discussed and is moving forward with using the one percent sales tax to hire more prosecutors. That should speed up the legal process shrink the jail population and save money.
"We're far enough ahead in the revenue side of our budget, both the one cent and the corporate replacement tax and of course we're looking forward to the payment of some of these old fines and stuff and we feel pretty confident in all that now."
The full board still has to vote on both ideas. Chairman Christiansen also says they'll keep a close eye on progress at the jail to make sure hiring all these new employees was the right move.
