Highlights of South Carolina GOP Debate (ContributorNetwork)

COMMENTARY | CBS and the National Journal hosted the latest GOP presidential debate Saturday evening that was partially (in most markets) televised on CBS and fully online.

During the debate in South Carolina, a more confident appearing Rick Perry made light of his brain freeze during the last debate in Michigan when he forgot the name of the Department of Energy.

Perry smiled and advised moderator Scott Pelley, "I'm glad you remembered it," when Pelley asked Perry about his advocating the elimination of the bureaucracy.

Pelley replied, "I've had some time to think about it," to which Perry quickly quipped, "Me too."

On a more serious topic, Herman Cain advised that he would surround himself with the right people in his Cabinet and actually listen to those people in forming a decision on how to proceed when asked about his stating he would listen to his generals for their advice as Commander in Chief.

Other topics included Pakistan and the Middle East. Cain advised that Obama was on the wrong side of the "Arab Spring" and that it was not clear whether Pakistan was friend or foe to the United States.

Perry addressed foreign aid to Pakistan and other countries. He said his foreign aid budget would start at zero and to scrutinize those that get it. He further advised it is "time for us as a country to say no to foreign aid to countries that do not support the United States of America."

Newt Gingrich agreed with Perry's statement about foreign aid and expounded that "It's a pretty good idea to start at zero and sometimes stay there."

Mitt Romney advised his stance on foreign policy would be that, "This century must be an American century. Where America has the strongest values, the strongest economy and the strongest military."

He further stated, "We have a president right now that thinks that America is just another nation. America is an exceptional nation."

"If we re-elect Barack Obama, Iran will have a nuclear weapon. And if you elect Mitt Romney, Iran will not have a nuclear weapon," Romney advised.

Gingrich also asserted, "There are a number of ways to be smart about Iran, and a few ways to be stupid. The administration skipped all the ways to be smart."

Topics that did not arise were Cain's 9-9-9 and "Romneycare," but a running theme was disapproval of Obama's handling of the Middle East as it relates to Israel and what some viewed as his turning his back on Israel altogether.

Gingrich and Romney did, however, voice their support for the President's decision to kill Anwar al-Awlaki as an enemy combatant.
