Some Kind Of Monster: Disney Television Animation Staff Art Show ...

The thing about animation is that it's art. I know that seems a little obvious, but what makes an animation wonderful is when you forget that you're looking at something someone drew, painted or sculpted and believe completely in the world of the characters and their story. That's why we spend a lot of time on this site talking about comic book artists, illustrators and visual storytellers, because the great paradox of their work is that one of their best measures of success is how much of it is, in a sense, invisible. They deserve recognition.

Possessed with that point of view, it was with great pleasure that I attended Disney Television Animations second ever staff art exhibition at the company's offices in Glendale, California. Titled "Some Kind of Monster," the show featured original works created by not just the visionaries and animators behind shows like Gravity Falls, Phoneas and Ferb and TRON: Uprising, but by producers, writers, office assistants, and anybody else on staff who wished to contribute.

The wine and cheese-fueled event was very much a grown-up version of the great flat-beer-soaked Thursday night art openings of California Institute of the Arts, the school that's shaped legions of animation's best talents (from Tim Burton to Pixar's John Lassetter to Gravity Falls creator Alex Hirsch), and was a fun demonstration of how all Disney's beloved series begin with some artist's idiosyncrasies put down in pencil, ink or paint. The theme of the show was monsters, which allowed for contributors to create a lot of cool work that wasn't directly informed by Disney's current animation slate (although quite naturally a lot of it was). Indeed, some of the pieces were quite dark, and some were explicitly political given the season.

Highly placed Disney staffers were on hand to talk about the shows. Senior Vice President, Original Series Eric Coleman said he was very eager for viewers to see Wander Over Yonder, the forthcoming new series by Powerpuff Girls creator Craig McCracken. Phineas and Ferb co-creator Dan Povenmire suggested he'd be down for a crossover with Gravity Falls.

Speaking of Gravity Falls, several Disney staffers told me they were very familiar with the dedicated podcast by ComicsAlliance contributors Eugene Ahn (aka Adam WarRock) and Chris Haley, who were also invited to the exhibit but did not attend on account of the fact that they actually live in a place so far away from LA that it might as well be Gravity Falls. These gentlemen's enthusiasm for the Hirsch series persuaded me to give it a shot, and it is definitely something special; more like the wry Cartoon-Cartoons of late '90s Cartoon Network than you may typically associate with Disney's less edgy idiom (the same goes for much of the company's current slate). Those of you who haven't seen Gravity Falls should watch the episode "The Time Traveler's Pig."

Besides the company's obvious investment in creativity and encouragement of fun in the workplace, my major takeaway from the evening was that Disney is keenly aware of the fact that while their animated shows must appeal to younger viewers, they enjoy an adult viewership who shares their appreciation for aesthetics and story. As I said, Gravity Falls won me over in a big way, and I've always suspected TRON: Uprising may be the company's specific offering for that older audience. When I asked about the series, Disney reps told me the new episodes beginning with last week's "The Reward" see the exceptionally beautiful show achieve a new level of sophistication. We've said it here before, but with character designs by Robert Valley, storyboards by Eric Canete and direction by Powerpuff Girls and Samurai Jack veteran Charlie Bean, TRON: Uprising is something adventure and sci-fi comics readers would really dig.

Disney provided some photos of the event that are much better than those I shot clandestinely with my iPhone, so check 'em out:

Law firms face growing threat from malpractice, class actions, social ...

CALGARY ? Law firms face a range of threats to the businesses they run but many can be mitigated with some careful risk management from the top.

At the eighth annual Canadian Bar Association?s Law Firm Leadership Conference held here, managing partners were presented with an overview of the top risks presenting in law firms today. ?

Malpractice claims were given special attention with Dan Pinnington, LawPRO vice president, claims prevention & stakeholder relations, providing an overview of trends.

?We?re seeing more claims and more complex claims,? he said, noting that in Ontario there are an average of 105 claims per year per 1,000 lawyers. ?The claims are more costly to resolve and defence costs are increasing.?

In Alberta, while claims were going up over the last three years, it?s now heading back down.

?Generally, across Canada the same kinds of mistakes are happening regardless of where the firm is and regardless of area of law,? said Pinnington.

He noted that four out of five lawyers will have at least one claim in their career. Of the 23,000 lawyers in Ontario, each year about 450 are calling LawPRO for the first time. It can take two to three years for the claim to come up after the work is done. The highest level of claims comes from lawyers in the 10- to 25-year span of practice.

Looking at claims from 2001 to 2011, Pinnington said most claims are reported on average two to three years after the service is provided. The biggest claims risk occurs not with substantive law (12 per cent), but rather within lawyer/client communication and relationship issues at 35 per cent of all claims, followed by time and deadline management (17 per cent), inadequate investigation/discovery of fact (16 per cent), clerical (six per cent), and confidentiality (five per cent).

In terms of total losses, 86 per cent of claims are under $100,000 and only four per cent are over $250,000.

?There are lots and lots of tiny claims. It?s not just count that matters ? it?s cost. A few very large claims can really impact our costs on any given basis,? he said.

Real estate was ranked as the area of law with the biggest claims cost.

Class actions against law firms also continue to also pose a significant threat, said Simon Chester, a partner with Heenan Blaikie LLP.

?The epidemic of class action litigation has reached us from the [United] States,? he said. ?Courts are starting to take a very generous view in Canada, more generous than the United States, to certification.?

He noted that a specific area to be watchful of is when law firm partners want to serve on boards of directors which creates potential for conflict of interest and liability threats, referring to Allen v. Aspen Group Resources Corp. as an example.

Anthony Davis, a partner with Hinshaw & Culbertson LLP in New York, declared it something that should be completely off limits for law firm members.

?It?s a really bad idea. You put all kinds of things in jeopardy when a partner serves as a director on a board. It?s no better for non-profits, just think about the claims for churches and synagogues, or when claims of fraud occur in major charities. If you?re going to allow it, make sure anyone who is serving as a director may not also provide legal services to the company. You need a very thorough disclosure letter to the board saying, ?He?s not your lawyer and he?s not to give you legal advice,?? said Davis.

Davis advised firms to have their own general counsel and an ethics partner to keep tabs on issues.

The panel also addressed cyber risks, including the use of social media, and the importance of stressing to young lawyers that activity on social media is ?permanent? and law firm policies need to be crystal clear.

93% The Sessions

All Critics (89) | Top Critics (32) | Fresh (83) | Rotten (6)

Most often with The Sessions the blunt comedy outweighs the drift toward sanctimony.

It sends viewers out of the theater with a heightened sense of the physical and a real feeling for all the things that sex means in human life.

The achievement of this simply told, exceptionally fine film is the clarity with which it portrays the drama of a good soul in an inert body.

Hawkes' performance is the must-see hook of The Sessions, but Hunt gives this funny, touching movie its soul.

Character actor John Hawkes is often cast as a frightening rustic (Winter's Bone, Martha Marcy May Marlene), but he gives a tender and witty performance here as Mark O'Brien.

The joy of The Sessions goes beyond sexual healing. It makes physical intimacy far more a matter of the heart, and you won't be alone wiping an occasional tear.

A sharply written, skillfully executed adult crowd-pleaser [that]avoids mawkishness and actually manages to inspire and amuse.

"The Sessions" introduces us to some harsh truths we may not want to consider, but the outcome is one we cannot fail to understand.

"The Sessions" is a film that reminds us of the fragility of life, and how human beings are capable of a deep emotional bond when it is least expected.

... a story of triumph over disability that takes the form of an uplifting sex comedy rather than a depressing saga of a dying man.

That exceedingly rare combination of sexy, clever and sweet, a winning tale of one charming disabled man's quest to get some stank on his hangdown.

The film greatly benefits from Hawkes' tremendous performance. (Full Content Review for Parents also available)

For the entire endeavor to emotionally register, you must buy into the romance that purportedly blossoms between Hawkes and Hunt. I didn't, not for a second.

Hawkes' work here is that good that it carries one away on a wave of emotion that dismisses critical thought. The film around him could have been better but you're unlikely to realize that while you're watching it.

...a perfectly watchable showcase for two undeniably above-average performances.

Uneven and perhaps a little too tidy as it aims to promote one man's extraordinary spirit. It is John Hawkes and Helen Hunt, however, who are most worth seeing.

Practically ignores everything about O'Brien's life except as it relates to his sexual odyssey, turning the life of the man into little more than a curio.

A powerful expression of our common needs, fears, and consolations.

For better and for worse, The Sessions has 'crowd-pleaser' written all over it.

Undeterred by storm, U.S. top court sticks to schedule

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Hurricane Sandy may shut down much of the federal government and halt public transport in Washington, D.C., on Monday but it will be business as usual at the U.S. Supreme Court, where justices - appointed for life - pride themselves in all manner of staying power.

The country's highest court is keeping to its oral-argument schedule and intends to hear cases through Wednesday, court spokeswoman Kathy Arberg said late on Sunday.

"It was the decision of the chief justice in consultation with court officials," Arberg said in a reference to Chief Justice John Roberts, who was appointed in 2005.

There is a tradition to this. In 1996, when a major snowstorm closed the federal government and brought Washington, D.C., to a near standstill, court arguments went on. Then-Chief Justice William Rehnquist, a Wisconsin native undeterred by snow and ruled by a strong sense of punctuality, made sure business that January 8 began on schedule.

Roberts, 57, who grew up in Indiana, was once a law clerk to Rehnquist, who died in 2005.

The justices are starting their second two-week round of arguments for the annual term, beginning on Monday with a foreign intelligence wiretap case and a copyright dispute. Non-emergency federal workers have been told to stay home on Monday.

Arberg said court officials would be monitoring the hurricane to determine whether safety factors might require a change in Tuesday's or Wednesday's schedule. Two cases are scheduled for each of those days.

During the January 1996 snowstorm, court officials picked up some of the justices in four-wheel-drive vehicles. Seven of the nine arrived on time for the 10 a.m. opening session. Justice David Souter eventually made it to the bench that Monday. Justice John Paul Stevens, who was in Florida at the time, did not. Both have since retired.

Arberg said she was unaware of any justices who would not make it in on Monday.

Loads of anti-virus options from different vendors exist currently within the market. These can be on the market as complete safety suites or as stand-alone merchandise. These products also could detect other malicious applications like spyware and ad-ware.

One other fundamental piece of computer software may be a firewall/program checker combination. Essentially a firewall checks information that is certainly sent or received by your Computer from the world wide web or LAN. The system checker component with the firewall checks/authorizes applications that access the online world. This element also monitor?s system level changes produced from the stated applications.

Other critical types of web safety software incorporate:

On the other hand, the most effective way of safely surfing the web can simply be summed up as follows:

By no means go to un-trusted web-sites. Secure web pages in most cases have a certificate to prevent information from being spoofed.
In no way download software and/or other files from un-trusted sources. Application from respected firms is also digitally signed.
Emails from un-trusted sources ought to be opened with caution. An email which is most likely spam need to by no means be opened.
Install the suitable computer software as described above to further enhance your PC?s security.
Constantly maintain the above talked about application up to date.
Unless required, maintain your laptop or computer offline.

Even so, even right after following all these measures, no laptop shall be 100% secure. There will often be a new virus or an ingenious technique that will be used to break into or harm a Pc. Backing up your data could be the final and the most important step that will be taken.

Ukrainian far-right surges in protest voting

KIEV (Reuters) - A Ukrainian nationalist party accused of being anti-Semitic and hostile to homosexuals has made sharp gains in the country's parliamentary election, shaking up its political elite.

Svoboda, which draws on suspicion of Russia and of Ukraine's large Russian-speaking minority, was winning about 9 percent of the ballot in early returns on Monday, though many saw its surge into parliament as more of a protest vote against the government and main opposition rather than an endorsement of its policies.

Allied in Europe with France's National Front, the British National Party and Hungary's Jobbik among others, Svoboda, whose name means Freedom, may take some 33 of parliament's 450 seats; having never previously held more than one, it will now be one of three main parties opposing President Viktor Yanukovich.

The movement, previously known by the Nazi-inflected title the Social-National Party, denies hostility to Jews, though its present leader, Oleh Tyahnybok, was once expelled from a mainstream parliamentary grouping after denouncing a previous Ukrainian government as a "mafia of Russians and Yids".

A 43-year-old urogenital surgeon, Tyahnybok hails from Lviv, the western heartland of Ukrainian nationalism during Soviet times and a stronghold today of opposition to the influence of Russian-speaking easterners - like President Yanukovich.

The rise of his party, which has criticized campaigns for gay rights and honors nationalist partisans who allied with Hitler's forces against the Red Army in World War Two, was apparently propelled by last-minute decisions among some voters.

"Svoboda was the biggest surprise," said political analyst Volodymyr Fesenko, noting that opinion polls taken as late as last week had forecast it might not secure the five percent of the national vote required to be represented in parliament.

"Many people decided to vote for Svoboda in the last few days," Fesenko said. "It was protest voting, not a vote for Ukrainian nationalism."

That seemed to be borne out by some of those who voted.

Dmytro Yakovenko, a 28-year-old journalist, said he opted for Svoboda out of frustration with the ruling Party of the Regions and its communist allies: "I wanted to swing the vote away from the communists and the Regions," he said in Kiev.

Yanukovich's party is nonetheless set fair to retain power.

Iryna Sorokun, 67, a pensioner, said of Svoboda: "They seem to be decent people and they have never been in parliament or government, so I thought I should give them a chance."

Svoboda, which follows other right-wing populist parties in making gains in Europe during the financial and economic crisis, also benefited from the Regions' efforts this year to enact a law bolstering the official status of the Russian language.

UNEASY OPPOSITION ALLIANCE

Svoboda's agenda includes limiting the number of government ministers who are not "ethnic Ukrainians" - a term that might affect notably ethnic Russians, who account for a sixth of the population, as well as Tatars, Jews and other small minorities.

One Svoboda activist famously campaigned successfully to have a bus driver in Lviv dismissed from his job after he refused to stop playing Russian-language songs on his route.

The party wants to ban abortion and, while Tyahnybok has been quoted as saying sexual orientation is "everyone's personal business", Svoboda has made clear it opposes gay rights and has demanded a ban on the "propaganda of sexual perversions".

The party leader denies it has ever been anti-Semitic. But it has held rallies calling for limits on Jewish pilgrimages to the grave of an 18th-century Hassidic rabbi in the city of Uman.

Some other opponents of Yanukovich have kept their distance: "It is hard to agree with some things that smell like the far right," said Vitaly Klitschko, a heavyweight boxing champion who leads the liberal party UDAR. "We won't support extremism."

However, the main united opposition bloc which includes the Batkivshchyna (Fatherland) party of Yanukovich's jailed adversary Yulia Tymoshenko, struck an alliance with Svoboda before the election to cooperate in parliament after the vote.

Which Emotions Have the Most Impact on Voters? | Psychology Today

Most Voters Are Driven by Emotions, Which Include Emotional Reactions to the Issues.

I often hear complaints about the fact that so many voters are deciding who to vote for based on emotion rather than rational responses to the issues. However, this is not an all-or-nothing situation with some voters making decisions purely for rational reasons while others decide only for emotional reasons. The truth is that just about all voters, including the most well-informed amongst us, have emotional responses to issues. If we didn?t we probably wouldn?t bother to vote at all.

If You Care Deeply About an Issue, You are Also Emotional About It!

When we think about the issues that matter most to us, we are likely to have intense emotional reactions to different stances on these topics. If you care about gay marriage, you will be happy imagining a time where any gay couple has the same legal rights as any straight couple. If you are against gay marriage, you probably smile at the thought of a world where no gay couple can get married. However, emotions may be even stronger on the negative side. For example, if you are pro-life, the idea of legalized abortions being available to anyone with an unwanted pregnancy probably infuriates you. In contrast, if you are pro-choice, hearing politicians talking about abolishing Roe v. Wade is likely to make you very upset. You can take just about any issue you are care deeply about, and thinking about an outcome that goes against what you hope for will likely get you very upset. That is not so bad as emotions, and particularly negative emotions like fear and anger are what drive many people to volunteer, make donations and, of course, vote!

Negative Emotional Reactions May Have the Most Influence. Why?

Generally, avoiding pain motivates people more than seeking pleasure (Tversky and Kahneman 1991). Most voters find it intensely painful to imagine their least favorite candidate winning the election. They could experience disappointment, worry, fear, sadness, anger or any combination of these if the candidate they don't want in the White House wins the election. Such emotions are very effective in motivating people to vote. Indeed, when I hear people on both sides talk about the candidates, I notice that people seem far more heated and passionate when they talk about the candidate they do not plan to vote for than when they talk about preferred candidate. The candidates themselves both seem to be aware of this. My favorite example of using negative feelings about the opponent to encourage voting came from a speech President Obama gave in late August, after crowds had just booed something about his opponent, Obama famously said, ?Don?t boo. Vote!??

The Media Often Stresses the Negatives More Than The Positives.

An October 22 New York Times article repoted that 80% of ads put out for Obama and 85% of ads put out for Romney have been negative. If we pay attention to social media, partucularly Facebook, Twitter and Google+, there seem to be far more negative comments about each candidate than positive comments. Similarly, in the mainstream media, it seems that we hear far more criticism of Obama than praise for Romney on Fox News and far more negative comments on Romney than praise for Obama on MSNBC. Even CNN (considered to be relatively neutral) seems to pay more attention to the political gaffes of each candidate than to their political triumphs. It could be that the gaffes are more interesting, or perhaps there are more gaffes than triumphs to cover. However, if you add to the mix the many comedians who have either covered the election or impersonated one or more of the candidates, you end up with a strong sense that we are paying more attention to the perceived weaknesses and even failings of each candidate than to their strengths or successes. That may not be a bad thing. Indeed, since avoiding pain is a stronger motivator than seeking pleasure, a focus on the negative side of each candidate may mean more people actually show up to vote!

Emotions Aren?t Always About Self-Interest!

When we think about the issues that matter most to us, we are likely to have intense emotional reactions to different stances on these topics. It is important to note that many of us get emotional about issues, even if we are not personally affected by them. For example, quite a few voters who are no longer fertile are still very committed to female reproductive rights. There are also many heterosexual voters who are passionate about promoting equal rights for gay Americans, and white males who are committed to affirmative action. There are even very wealthy Americans making donations to political candidates who will increase their own taxes. This includes the two wealthiest people in the country, Bill Gates and Warren Buffet. Similarly, many voters have secure jobs with excellent health insurance benefits, but are still very emotionally committed to public options for healthcare.

On the other side of the political divide, there are Americans without health insurance who are passionately against having a public option or any other type of healthcare reform (e.g. ?ObamaCare?). In short, when Americans vote, volunteer or make contributions to a campaign, it is often for emotional reasons, not because it will improve their personal bottom line.

So Embrace All Your Emotions, Even the Negative Ones! Then, Go Vote!

Emotion often gets a bad rap. The fact that emotion drives much of voting is not a bad thing. Emotion drives the passion that leads people to volunteer, make personal donations to causes they care about, and deal with the hassle of voting. So don?t feel bad about not being purely rational. Get emotional, get involved, and vote!

How Food Became Technology [Excerpt]

Patent protection helped transform agriculture into agribusiness

Editor's Note: Excerpted from Bet the Farm: How Food Stopped Being Food, by Frederick Kaufman. With permission from the publisher, Wiley. Copyright ? Frederick Kaufman, 2012.

Once upon a time, nymphs, sprites, and spirits ruled every?cavern, tree, field, and brook, and a meal was plucked from?a bush, scooped from the mud, or carved from the carcass?of some unfortunate creature. Then everything changed.?A tribe of infidels and heretics decided it could no longer?leave something as important as breakfast, lunch, and dinner?to the vagaries of chance and the whimsy of the gods. These revolutionaries drained lakes, rerouted rivers, chopped down?forests, and slashed straight into the guts of Mother Earth.?They were the first farmers.

Ten thousand years of meddling with food has not made the?meddling any more popular, even if the history of civilization?has hinged on the science of food. Assyrian bas-reliefs and?Sumerian cuneiform tablets depict artificial pollination?and manipulating the sex life of plants was one of the first?technological feats that enabled our world of abundant fruits?and vegetables, meat, bread, and chocolate.

What set the earliest agriculturalists apart from the even?earlier hunter-gatherers? As the first farmers denuded nature,?hoarded seeds, and engineered crops, they most likely appeared?to be mad scientists, coaxing mutant monsters from the black?earth. Of course, we no longer think very much about the fact?that almost everything we eat has been?domesticated and that?domestication implies a history of human intervention. In fact,?most people are unaware that the typical supermarket and?green market varieties of apples, oranges, lettuce, and raspberries are not at all the same as their wild cousins.

Domesticated fruits and vegetables are generally larger?than their undomesticated counterparts. They are sweeter and?more aromatic. Compared to their great-great-grandparents,?modern fruits and vegetables have lost their fuzz, their fiber,?their thorns, and their puberty. A modern tomato?heirloom,?organic, process, vine-ripened, or otherwise?bears little?resemblance to its puny, sour, undomesticated relations that?sprout in the Peruvian Andes. Tomato breeding has changed?tomatoes down to the DNA, and the successful varieties that?have found their way into our supermarket carts have been?cloned and cloned again.

The red jungle fowl of Thailand eventually became a Perdue chicken. The extinct aurochs of the Fertile Crescent?eventually became Holstein cows. The primeval apples of?Kazakhstan eventually became Gala and Red Delicious.?Ancient tillers of the earth needed at least 300 years to domesticate corn and more than 1,000 years to?domesticate wheat. But no one really knows how weeds first?became crops.

Did mongrel grains serendipitously meld together and?sprout from the sewage dumps of sedentary fishing tribes?(a current theory), or was the domestication of wheat grasses,?pomegranates, and fig trees a willful act of genius? The most?ancient of these technologies created new forms of life. And?our fear of Frankenstein predates Mary Shelley's monster.??In? The Winter's Tale, William Shakespeare laced Perdita's?voice with anxiety and disgust as she condemned "Nature's?bastards," new varieties of flowers created by Elizabethan?methods of artificial pollination. Not to worry, argued Polixenes, for "Nature is made better by no mean / But Nature?makes that mean; so over that art / Which you say adds to?Nature, is an art / That Nature makes."

Pocket brings its 'read it later' service to Mac App Store, keeps its free status

We know Pocket has had a strong presence on iOS, Android and other platforms for quite some time now, but today the service formerly known as Read it Later announced it is now making its way to a bigger Cupertino screen. Naturally, Pocket's new application isn't much different than its mobile versions, meaning it'll offer the same offline access, save-for-later features as it currently does on the mobile front but with a more "native Mac experience" -- of course, this includes the ability to sync across multiple devices, stream videos and share tidbits via those cherished social networks. What's more, Pocket won't be charging a dime for its novel and handy OS X app, though this shouldn't come as a surprise given the outfit's somewhat recently adopted no-cost model -- still, it's a gesture most people will certainly appreciate, and one you Mac folk can start enjoying now by downloading from to the desktop-based App Store.

TIP 1: Get an Energy Audit

Before we get into the nitty-gritty, we should mention that the best way to get your home operating at its maximum efficiency is to hire a professional?BPI certified?energy rater to evaluate your spaces. This person will conduct what?s called an ?energy audit? and he or she will test your home for energy losses and safety issues, and generate a detailed report highlighting what your home?s issues are. With a report in hand you can easily?target and prioritize exactly what you need to do, and what you can afford to do.

If you can?t afford an energy audit, you can start to identify and remedy some problem areas on your own with the help of an infrared?thermometer, like the?Ryobi Non-Contact Infrared Thermometer. This handy gun allows you to safely measure surface temperatures and pinpoint spots where your home is experiencing air leaks or missing insulation. As energy efficiency expert David Johnson says, ?Air leaks account for 25-30% of an average?energy?bill, and this is one of the most profound steps that you can make for the betterment of your home?s comfort and reducing the amount of your monthly bill.?

Our tips ahead will address common problem areas seen in all types of homes, and they will offer solutions to problems that can be?easily?fixed, often without calling on help from a professional.

TIP 2: Seal Your Walls

The mantra in green construction is: ?seal it tight, ventilate right?. The sealing part is about getting a handle on all the places where air penetrates?through?the wall and causes drafts and fluctuations to the temperature inside your home. A simple tube of high quality caulk and a plan to tackle all those problem areas can go a long way if you know where to look (hint: grab your infrared thermometer).

What keeps the outside air out of your home is typically the interior walls (or drywall), but you?ll find many holes that have been cut out of these walls to install your plugs and switches. If you have ever removed the face-plates of ?these plugs and switches during cold weather, you?ll have probably noticed some cold air pouring out. Reduce this leakage by using caulk to seal around the the area where the electric box meets the drywall.?If you?re comfortable working around electricity, head to the breaker, turn it off, then test the outlets to make sure they are really off. Once off, you can then pull them out of the box and begin to seal up all the little holes in the back of the box, including where the wires come through.

TIP 3: Seal Your Home?s Can Lights

Other?notorious?culprits that contribute to air leaks are recessed lights found in the ceiling.?Many old can lights are actually vented on purpose to keep from being overheated by the lightbulb (they are called non-IC or non-insulation contact rated cans).?Because warm air rises, an unsealed can light below a roof is a big problem.?It?s a good idea is to remove the existing ring of this can and seal the can?s perimeter with caulk. The inside of the can should be sealed with either caulk or aluminum tape to keep your home?s warm air from escaping into the attic.

It?s very important that you not?put an incandescent bulb in the can. Instead, opt for something like a Cree LED recessed light?? this light is?dimmable, super-efficient and does not build up heat. Moreover, if you have a non-IC rated can, it?s a really good idea to put a note inside to not use incandescent lights in the future. An overheated fixture has the potential to cause serious problems. If you can?t give up your?incandescent, another approach is to go into the attic, install and seal a box made from drywall around the light, and then insulate from above. This has the added?benefit?of improving you r-value,?or insulating effectiveness.

TIP 4: Look For Insulation Gaps

Anywhere you have something that penetrates the wall, there is bound to be an air leak. Check out the outside faucets, air vents and plumbing for large gaps where air can escape. Seal the penetrations with expanding foam so that every nook and cranny?is filled. Be careful to never seal next to a gas flue or you will have a fire hazard on your hands.

Once that is done, if you are ready to get dirty, check out where the foundation meets the house and crawlspace and fill those little forgotten cracks ? note areas where you see even the slightest bit of daylight passing through. There is even an expanding foam for the big holes?and a fire block version for holes between floors or for sealing electrical boxes. We also?recommend?practicing on a?scrap surface to see how the foam works. Remember to wear gloves when using the foam ? this stuff is really sticky before it sets!

ultratouch denim insulation, ultratouch, denim insulation, green insulation, healthy insulation, eco friendly insulation, recycled insulation, insulation alternatives

While expanding foam is ideal when dealing with air leaks, spray-and-go won?t always work with those extra big gaps. In spots that need an extra bit of air-stopping artillery, we recommend rolling out some insulation. But before grab for that pink stuff on the shelf ? a.k.a. fiberglass insulation ? we recommend that you consider using?Ultratouch denim insulation?instead. Unlike its counterpart, Ultratouch?is made from high-quality natural fibers (80% of which are post-consumer recycled)?that provide for extremely effective sound absorption and good thermal performance. You also won?t have to worry about getting the ?fiberglass itch??with the denim insulation; it is easy to handle and work with ? but we still?recommend?using a mask.?The perforated batts make off-size cavity installation easy. Simply measure, tear, carefully fit and cover with an air tight?barrier?and you are good to go.

3M Pleated filter, Furnace, health furnace, healthy furnace filters, tune up your furnace, energy efficient furnace

TIP 5: Check and Tune-up Your Heating System

Before the start of the cold season, it?s not a bad idea to tune up your furnace. 30% of an average?home?s energy costs?are?related to heating, and this number can spike further if you have inefficiencies with your furnace or boiler system. The first place to start is by replacing the filter at the beginning of the season and every couple of months while you run the furnace.?When purchasing a new filter, note that the cheap ones are made just to protect the furnace fan motor, so make sure to get a more?efficient and healthy pleated filter?for improved air quality.

A tune-up is a good way to cut down on energy, prevent carbon monoxide leaks, and keep the air inside your home safe and healthy for you and your family.?A tune-up should be a top priority, especially given that your furnace or boiler system will be running at full blast for months to come ? you don?t want it to give out right when you need it the most!?While the cost of a tune-up may at first glance seem like an unnecessary expenditure, keep in mind that small problems can easily turn into much larger, expensive replacements down the road. A?new furnace is a substantial financial investment ? regular maintenance postpones its replacement.

windows, winter windows, new windows, window upgrade, open windows, window and heat, window and insulation

Image:?Early morning frosty winter view through a window via Shutterstock

TIP 6: Check Your Windows

Windows that are unsuited for a home?s local climate can be a big contributor to inefficiency. If you live in an area that gets especially cold in the winter, investing in windows with insulated glass that?s double-paned or even triple-paned has the potential to transform the comfort of your home and your energy bill.

There are three main types of windows that are available on the market today and they include single-pane, double-pane, and super-triple-pane windows. Single- and double- pane windows are common in older houses, but windows in newer homes are commonly treated with?Low-emittance (low-E) coatings (this can include both super windows and double pane windows). Low-E?coatings?are microscopically thin, virtually invisible, metal or metallic oxide layers deposited on a window to suppress radiative heat flow. The coating keeps?radiant heat on the same side of the glass from which it originated, all while letting visible light pass ? which means in the winter heat is reflected in, and in the summer heat is reflected out.?Different types of Low-E?coatings have been designed to allow for high solar gain, moderate solar gain, or low solar gain, and their application will depend on what region your home is located.

Super windows are a more recent development that feature a third pane of treated glass, and in some cases?boast a krypton/argon/air gas mix?in between the panes. When it comes to thermal?performance, these windows are second to none and they can reduce your energy bill by?hundreds of dollars. The choices can be daunting when selecting new windows and payback long, so make sure to do?diligent?research?and ?tune? your windows to take advantage of solar heat.

cellular shades, go green in your home, green home tips, save money, save money in your home, save energy in your home, products that help you save energy, energy saving products

While?new windows?would be great for everyone, we understand that they are a hefty investment that require a lot of?technical?analysis from a skilled professional. Moreover,?new windows can often be just marginally more efficient than old ones (compared to your wall?s r-value for instance).?Energy?efficiency?is about looking at the home as a system, and this is a long-term investment you shouldn?t be hasty or thrifty about. Get an?energy audit?before?you make the plunge into making any window replacement.

With that said, there are many improvements that you can make to what you already have. They require just a little effort, but can pay out big in cash savings and improved comfort.?More simple remedies can easily be found on the shelves of your local hardware store. Purchase some caulk and cellular shades (insulating blinds) to really increase efficiency. Use caulk?to seal the window frame, and then setup your cellular shades. These shades are easy to install and work by creating pockets of air to insulate windows from the cold. A?good set of shades?can double or triple a window?s performance making these a no?brainier?for winter comfort and energy savings.

TIP 7: Install a Smart Thermostat

Ok, so you got through the grunt work, now its time to put in some sexy technology to really save some energy. Programmable thermostats (or t-stats) have gotten a bad rap for being difficult to use, and the EPA has yanked their Energy Star designation as a result. However, there are new, much more intuitive?designs?out there, like the?Wi-Fi enabled Honeywell t-stat. Honeywell?s model?not only lets you control the device from your iPhone or computer, but it tells you when there are significant temperature swings coming and even when the filter needs to be changed.

Programmable thermostats?come in many varieties and price ranges, and getting one can save the average household about $180?a year if it?s used right. The idea is simple: these smart devices allow you to?optimize your home?s energy-efficiency by setting pre-programmed temperatures for different situations, seasons and times.?For example, you probably don?t want to be paying for heat during the day when you?re not even there, right? You can set your?programmable thermostat?to automatically turn down the heat during those hours and turn it up when you and your family come home to save money and energy.

CPR less likely for minorities on street or home

(AP Photo/Ed Andrieski)

(AP) ? People who collapse from cardiac arrest in poor black neighborhoods are half as likely to get CPR from family members at home or bystanders on the street as those in better-off white neighborhoods, according to a study that found the reasons go beyond race.

The findings suggest a big need for more knowledge and training, the researchers said.

The study looked at data on more than 14,000 people in 29 U.S. cities. It's one of the largest to show how race, income and other neighborhood characteristics combine to affect someone's willingness to offer heart-reviving help.

More than 300,000 people suffer a cardiac arrest in their homes or other non-hospital settings every year, and most don't survive. A cardiac arrest is when the heart stops, and it's often caused by a heart attack, but not always. Quick, hard chest compressions can help people survive.

For their study, researchers looked at the makeup of neighborhoods and also the race of the victims. They found that blacks and Hispanics were 30 percent less likely to be aided than white people. The odds were the worst if the heart victim was black in a low-income black neighborhood.

The researchers also found that regardless of a neighborhood's racial makeup, CPR was less likely to be offered in poor areas. That shows that socio-economic status makes more difference than the neighborhood's racial makeup, said lead author Dr. Comilla Sasson, of the University of Colorado in Denver.

While few people in poor black neighborhoods got CPR, those who did faced double the odds of surviving. Overall, only 8 percent of patients survived until at least hospital discharge, but 12 percent of those who got bystander CPR did versus just 6 percent of those who did not.

About 80 percent of the cardiac arrest victims in the study had collapsed in their own homes. That suggests lack of knowledge about how to do CPR. But also, people tend to panic and freeze when they encounter someone in cardiac arrest, and they need to know that cardiopulmonary resuscitation is easier than many realize, Sasson said.

She said the study results should prompt public outcry ? especially since most people who suffer cardiac arrest in non-hospital settings won't survive and those statistics haven't changed in 30 years.

"We can't accept that anymore," she said. "It shouldn't matter where I drop to have someone help me."

The study appears in Thursday's New England Journal of Medicine.

The researchers analyzed data from 2005-2009 from a cardiac arrest registry coordinated by the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and Emory University. They also examined U.S. Census data in cities where study patients were stricken ? including Atlanta; Boston; Columbus, Ohio; Denver; Houston; Nashville; and San Francisco. Whether similar results would be found in small cities or rural areas isn't known.

Much of the research was done before experts changed CPR advice in a move many think may encourage bystanders to offer help. American Heart Association guidelines issued in 2008 emphasize quick, hard chest compressions rather than mouth-to-mouth resuscitation ? removing some of the discomfort factor.

Mary Tappe owes her life to bystanders' willingness to offer help.

In 2004, she collapsed at her office in Iowa. A co-worker called 911; another quickly began CPR and someone else used the office's automated heart defibrillator. An ambulance took Tappe to the hospital, where doctors said her heart had stopped. They never determined why but implanted an internal defibrillator.

Tappe, 51, who now lives in Englewood, Colo., said raising awareness about the importance of CPR is "incredibly important because that's the first step" to helping people survive.

CPR specialist Dr. Dana Edelson, an assistant professor at the University of Chicago Medical Center, said the new research echoes smaller studies showing bystander CPR depends on neighborhood characteristics, including a Chicago study that found intervention occurred most often in integrated neighborhoods.

"Nothing that we do has as big an impact on survival as CPR, and it's so cheap," Edelson said, noting that online videos demonstrate how to do CPR.

It involves pushing hard and fast on the victim's chest; research has shown using the beat of the old Bee Gees song "Stayin' Alive" is a good guide.

"It's your ultimate low-budget solution to improving survival," Edelson said.

Dr. David Keseg, an emergency medicine specialist at Ohio State University, has helped teach CPR to eighth-graders in inner-city Columbus, Ohio. That includes giving them free classes and CPR kits.

"We tell them to take them home and show their families and neighborhoods how to do it," Keseg said.

"It's kind of a drop in the bucket," but it's the kind of targeted approach that is needed to improve the odds of surviving a cardiac arrest, he said.

Clint Eastwood, Morgan Freeman: friends in film, rivals in political ads

LOS ANGELES (TheWrap.com) - Morgan Freeman, with the two "Unforgiven" stars recording dueling narrations in ads aimed at presidential election voters.

Eastwood's wizened vocals are currently injecting a healthy dose of machismo into a new spot for Mitt Romney, which is running in swing states like Colorado, Virginia and Ohio. It's backed by the pro-Romney superpac American Crossroads.

That Eastwood is going to bat for the GOP standard bearer is not much of a surprise given his Rococo rant at an empty chair during this year's Republican National Convention.

"Obama's second term would be a rerun of the first and our country just couldn't survive that," Eastwood, sans chair, warns. "We need someone who can turn it around fast and that man is Mitt Romney. There's not much time left - the future of our country is at stake."

On the opposite side of the aisle, Freeman is bringing the gravitas to an ad touting President Obama's accomplishments. The spot, from the Obama campaign, emphasizes that things are getting better even though the economy is still shaky. It began airing this month

"Every president inherits challenges," Freeman intones. "Few have faced so many. Four years later, our enemies have been brought to justice, our heroes are coming home, assembly lines are humming again. There are still challenges to meet: children to educate, a middle class to rebuild. But the last thing we should do is turn back now."

What do you think? Who did a better job of talking up their candidate? More important, will this political division prevent a "Million Dollar Baby" sequel from happening?
