Brad Keselowski: Twitter Using Daytona 500 Driver Tweets From Car During Race Delay

DAYTONA BEACH (Reuters) - NASCAR driver Brad Keselowski caused an online stir during Monday's delayed Daytona 500 race by tweeting from his car and picking up over 100,000 Twitter followers in the process.
Keselowski posted a photograph of his view of the incident where a jet-dryer truck set fire spectacularly after being hit by Colombian Juan Pablo Montoya with 40 laps remaining.
The 28-year-old driver also tweeted quick reactions to incidents in the race and shared his phone with fellow-drivers during the two-hour break as the track was cleared of the truck.
Most professional sports ban competitors from tweeting during events but NASCAR, keen to make ground in social media, has taken a more lenient attitude.
The Dodge driver took advantage of several breaks in the race to update his followers.
Keselowski interactive approach was not only a hit with the thousands of fans who followed his tweets but his rivals also approved.
"That's how Brad is. That's what he makes and what he enjoys," runner up Dale Earnhardt Jr told reporters.
"I thought it was pretty funny."
Keselowski finished 32nd in the race won by Matt Kenseth after being involved in a group collision late in the race.
"Nothing we could do there... never saw the wreck till we were windshield deep," he tweeted.

YEARS ago, Charlie, a highly respected orthopaedist and a mentor of mine, found a lump in his stomach. He had a surgeon explore the area, and the diagnosis was pancreatic cancer. This surgeon was one of the best in the country. He had even invented a new procedure for this exact cancer that could treble a patient's five-year-survival odds - from 5 per cent to 15 per cent - albeit with a poor quality of life.
Charlie was uninterested. He went home the next day, closed his practice, and never set foot in a hospital again. He focused on spending time with family and feeling as good as possible. Several months later, he died at home. He got no chemotherapy, radiation, or surgical treatment. Medicare didn't spend much on him.
It isn't a frequent topic of discussion, but doctors die, too. And they do not die like the rest of us. What is unusual about them is not how much treatment they get compared with most Americans, but how little. For all the time they spend fending off the deaths of others, they tend to be fairly serene when faced with death themselves. They know exactly what is going to happen, they know the choices, and they generally have access to any sort of medical care they could want. But they go gently.
Of course, doctors don't want to die; they want to live. But they know enough about modern medicine to know its limits. And they know enough about death to know what all people fear most: dying in pain, and dying alone. They have talked about this with their families. They want to be sure, when the time comes, that no heroic measures will happen - that they will never experience, during their last moments on earth, someone breaking their ribs in an attempt to resuscitate them with cardiopulmonary resuscitation (that's what happens if CPR is done right).
Almost all medical professionals have seen what we call 'futile care' being performed on people. That is when doctors bring the cutting edge of technology to bear on a grievously ill person near the end of life. The patient will get cut open, perforated with tubes, hooked up to machines, and assaulted with drugs. All of this occurs in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) at a cost of tens of thousands of dollars a day. What it buys is misery we would not inflict on a terrorist. I cannot count the number of times fellow physicians have told me, in words that vary only slightly: 'Promise me, if you find me like this, that you'll kill me.' They mean it. Some medical personnel wear medallions stamped 'NO CODE' to tell physicians not to perform CPR on them. I have even seen it as a tattoo.
To administer medical care that makes people suffer is anguishing. Physicians are trained to gather information without revealing any of their own feelings, but in private, among fellow doctors, they'll vent. 'How can anyone do that to their family members?' they'll ask. I suspect it is one reason physicians have higher rates of alcohol abuse and depression than professionals in most other fields. I know it is one reason I stopped participating in hospital care for the last 10 years of my practice.
How has it come to this - that doctors administer so much care that they wouldn't want for themselves? The simple, or not-so-simple, answer is this: patients, doctors, and the system.
To see how patients play a role, imagine a scenario in which someone has lost consciousness and been admitted to an emergency room. As is so often the case, no one has made a plan for this situation, and shocked and scared family members find themselves caught up in a maze of choices. They are overwhelmed. When doctors ask if they want 'everything' done, they answer yes. Then the nightmare begins. Sometimes, a family really means 'do everything', but often they just mean 'do everything that's reasonable'. The problem is that they may not know what is reasonable, nor, in their confusion and sorrow, will they ask about it or hear what a physician may be telling them. For their part, doctors told to do 'everything' will do it, whether it is reasonable or not.
The above scenario is a common one. Feeding into the problem are unrealistic expectations of what doctors can accomplish. Many people think of CPR as a reliable life-saver when, in fact, the results are usually poor. I have had hundreds of people brought to me in the emergency room after getting CPR. Exactly one, a healthy man who'd had no heart troubles (for those who want specifics, he had a 'tension pneumothorax'), walked out of the hospital. If a patient suffers from severe illness, old age, or a terminal disease, the odds of a good outcome from CPR are infinitesimal, while the odds of suffering are overwhelming. The trouble is that even doctors who hate to administer futile care must find a way to address the wishes of patients and families. Establishing trust and confidence under such circumstances is a very delicate thing. People are prepared to think the doctor is acting out of base motives, trying to save time, or money, or effort, especially if the doctor is advising against further treatment.
Some doctors are stronger communicators than others, and some doctors are more adamant, but the pressures they all face are similar. When I faced circumstances involving end-of-life choices, I adopted the approach of laying out only the options that I thought were reasonable (as I would in any situation) as early in the process as possible. When patients or families brought up unreasonable choices, I would discuss the issue in layman's terms that portrayed the downsides clearly. If patients or families still insisted on treatments I considered pointless or harmful, I would offer to transfer their care to another doctor or hospital.
Should I have been more forceful at times? I know that some of those transfers still haunt me. One of the patients of whom I was most fond was an attorney from a famous political family. She had severe diabetes and terrible circulation, and, at one point, she developed a painful sore on her foot. Knowing the hazards of hospitals, I did everything I could to keep her from resorting to surgery. Still, she sought out outside experts with whom I had no relationship. Not knowing as much about her as I did, they decided to perform bypass surgery on her chronically clogged blood vessels in both legs. This did not restore her circulation, and the surgical wounds would not heal. Her feet became gangrenous, and she endured bilateral leg amputations. Two weeks later, in the famous medical centre in which all this had occurred, she died.
It is easy to find fault with both doctors and patients in such stories, but in many ways all the parties are simply victims of a larger system that encourages excessive treatment. In some unfortunate cases, doctors use the fee-for-service model to do everything they can, no matter how pointless, to make money. More commonly, though, doctors are fearful of litigation and do whatever they are asked, with little feedback, to avoid getting in trouble.
Even when the right preparations have been made, the system can still swallow people up. One of my patients was a man named Jack, a 78-year-old who had been ill for years and undergone about 15 major surgical procedures. He explained to me that he never, under any circumstances, wanted to be placed on life support machines again. One Saturday, however, Jack suffered a massive stroke and got admitted to the emergency room unconscious, without his wife. Doctors did everything possible to resuscitate him and put him on life support in the ICU. This was Jack's worst nightmare. When I arrived at the hospital and took over Jack's care, I spoke to his wife and to hospital staff, bringing in my office notes with his care preferences. Then I turned off the life support machines and sat with him. He died two hours later.
Even with all his wishes documented, Jack had not died as he had hoped. The system had intervened. One of the nurses, I later found out, even reported my unplugging of Jack to the authorities as a possible homicide. Nothing came of it, of course: Jack's wishes had been spelt out explicitly, and he'd left the paperwork to prove it. But the prospect of a police investigation is terrifying for any physician. I could far more easily have left Jack on life support against his stated wishes, prolonging his life, and his suffering, a few more weeks. I would even have made a little more money, and Medicare would have ended up with an additional US$500,000 (S$629,000) bill. It is no wonder many doctors err on the side of overtreatment.
But doctors still don't over-treat themselves. They see the consequences of this constantly. Almost anyone can find a way to die in peace at home, and pain can be managed better than ever. Hospice care, which focuses on providing terminally ill patients with comfort and dignity rather than on futile cures, provides most people with much better final days. Amazingly, studies have found that people placed in hospice care often live longer than people with the same disease who are seeking active cures. I was struck to hear on the radio recently that the famous reporter Tom Wicker had 'died peacefully at home, surrounded by his family'. Such stories are, thankfully, increasingly common.
Several years ago, my older cousin Torch (born at home by the light of a flashlight) had a seizure that turned out to be the result of lung cancer that had gone to his brain. I arranged for him to see various specialists, and we learnt that with aggressive treatment of his condition, including three to five hospital visits a week for chemotherapy, he would live perhaps four months. Ultimately, he decided against any treatment and simply took pills for brain swelling. He moved in with me.
We spent the next eight months doing a bunch of things that he enjoyed, having fun together like we hadn't had in decades. We went to Disneyland, his first time. We hung out at home. Torch was a sports nut, and he was very happy to watch sports and eat my cooking. He even gained a bit of weight, eating his favourite foods rather than hospital foods. He had no serious pain, and he remained high-spirited. One day, he didn't wake up. He spent the next three days in a coma-like sleep and then died. The cost of his medical care for those eight months, for the one drug he was taking, was about US$20.
Torch was no doctor, but he knew he wanted a life of quality, not just quantity. Don't most of us? If there is a state of the art of end-of-life care, it is this: death with dignity. As for me, my physician has my choices. They were easy to make, as they are for most physicians. There will be no heroics, and I will go gentle into that good night. Like my mentor Charlie. Like my cousin Torch. Like my fellow doctors.

Apple's China legal battle over iPad spreads to U.S. | China Media
LOS ANGELES/HONG KONG?? A Chinese firm trying to stop Apple Inc from using the iPad name in China has launched an attack on the consumer electronics giant?s home turf, filing a lawsuit in California that accuses it of employing deception when it bought the trademark.
A unit of Proview International Holdings Ltd, a major computer monitor maker that fell on hard times during the global financial crisis, is already suing Apple in multiple Chinese jurisdictions and requesting that sales of iPads be suspended across the country.
Last week, Proview Electronics Co Ltd and Proview Technology Co filed a lawsuit in Santa Clara County that brings their legal dispute to Silicon Valley.
Some legal experts said there could be different outcomes from the U.S. and Chinese cases, but a spreading of the lawsuit and delay in coming to settlement terms could hurt Apple more.
?In relation to the U.S., Apple is going to somewhat have a homeground advantage,? said Elliot Papageorgiou, a Shanghai-based partner and executive at law firm Rouse Legal (China).
At stake for Apple is its sales and shipments in China, where its CEO Tim Cook said it was merely scratching the surface. Debt-laden Proview International, meanwhile, needs to come up with a viable rescue plan before mid-2012 or else it faces delisting from the Hong Kong stock exchange.
?Given the current timeline, Apple would have the greater impetus to come to settlement simply because the ability to disrupt shipments is more immediate than the pressure faced by Proview and its potential delisting,? said Papageorgiou.
Proview accuses Apple of creating a special purpose entity ? IP Application Development Ltd, or IPAD ? to buy the iPad name from it, concealing Apple?s role in the matter.
In its filing, Proview alleged lawyers for IPAD repeatedly said it would not be competing with the Chinese firm, and refused to say why they needed the trademark.
Those representations were made ?with the intent to defraud and induce the plaintiffs to enter into the agreement,? Proview said in the filing dated February 17, requesting an unspecified amount of damages.
Apple on Friday reiterated its statement saying that it had bought Proview?s worldwide rights to the iPad trademark in 10 different countries several years ago. It also said that Proview had refused to honor their agreement and a Hong Kong court had sided with the U.S. technology giant in the matter.
?Our case is still pending in mainland China,? Apple said.
DISPUTE HINGES ON 2009 DEAL
The battle between a little-known Asian company and the world?s most valuable technology corporation dates back to a disagreement over precisely what was covered in a deal for the transfer of the iPad trademark to Apple in 2009.
Authorities in several Chinese cities, such as Shijiazhuang and Huizhou, have already banned the sale of iPads, citing the legal dispute.
Proview, which maintains it holds the iPad trademark in China, has been suing Apple in various jurisdictions in the country for trademark infringement, while also using the courts to get retailers in some smaller cities to stop selling the tablet PCs.
Major electronics retailer Suning has resumed selling iPads online this week in China after it stopped sales last week due to a supply shortage, rather than because of the lawsuit, company executives said.
China is becoming an increasingly pivotal market for Apple, which sold more than 15 million iPads worldwide in the last quarter alone and is trying to expand its business in the world?s No. 2 economy to sustain its rip-roaring pace of growth.
It now has a 76 percent market share in China?s tablet PC sector, followed by Lenovo Group Ltd and Samsung Electronics Co Ltd that have a combined share of only 10 percent, data from research firm IDC showed.
The country is also where the majority of its iPhones and iPads are now assembled, in partnership with Taiwan?s Foxconn.
A Shanghai court this week threw out Proview?s request to halt iPad sales in the city. But the outcome of the broader dispute hinges on a higher court in Guangdong, which earlier ruled in Proview?s favor.
The next hearing in that case is set for February 29. Proview lawyers said there might not be a decision immediately and it could take weeks or months before there was an outcome.
?It is more appropriate for both parties to mediate. I think that is the best outcome,? David Chen, senior partner at Allbright Law Offices in Shanghai.
China?s trademark system is a minefield of murky rules and opportunistic ?trademark squatters? that even the world?s biggest companies and their highly-paid lawyers find hard to navigate.
Legal experts say the onus is on companies looking to do business in China to understand how China?s trademark law works, as it differs greatly from that of the United States.
Industry executives have said employing special-purpose entities to acquire trademarks is a frequent tactic in China.

One of my biggest worries about early retirement is health care. The cost of health care keeps increasing every year, and it is outpacing inflation by a wide margin. Sometimes I wonder if my investments can keep up with rising health care costs. This is a big problem for early retirees because we won?t qualify for Medicare until age 65. If you retire before then, medical insurance can be very expensive and difficult to find. Here are some options for those of us who dream of early retirement:

COBRA . If you leave a job with a group health insurance plan, the Consolidated Omnibus Budget Reconciliation Act allows you to continue using the same health care plan for a limited amount of time if you are willing to pay the whole cost. This means you will have to pay any amount your employer used to cover plus administrative expenses. The good thing about COBRA is that you benefit from the group rate and continued coverage. However, the cost can be a bit shocking to employees who formerly paid only a part of the cost. COBRA coverage generally lasts for up to 18 months, so if you are 63 and a half, this might be the way to go until you qualify for Medicare.
Retiree health insurance . Some companies offer retiree health insurance to long-tenured employees. To qualify, your age plus your years of service might need to pass a certain threshold, such as 70. If you are hoping to retire with such a plan, get all the information from your company retirement program. Some programs may subsidize a portion of your health insurance premium until Medicare kicks in.

Part-time job . A part-time job might provide the health insurance you need until you are old enough to qualify for Medicare. Spouse?s insurance . If you have a working spouse whose employer offers a family health care plan, this is another way to fill in the health insurance gap. The premium is generally much less than buying insurance privately.
Private insurance . This is a very costly option because you do not receive any group discounts. The insurance provider can also decline your application if you have pre-existing conditions. Your state may have a group plan that you can join if you?ve been turned down by a private insurer. Your state may also subsidize a portion of the health care premium if your income is below a certain level. However, low income plans might have many requirements and a long wait time to join.

On demand health care . This might be a good option if you are young and relatively healthy. On demand health care clinics offer an affordable option for everyday health problems. For example, each visit at ZoomCare costs $99, which may be a good short-term solution if you don?t have a chronic illness. But this may not be a good option for older people because long-term illnesses may crop up.
Finding affordable health care is a huge problem for early retirees, and there is no easy way to avoid the high price. Perhaps we will have more options when the health insurance exchanges become operational. Until then, we just have to take care of our health as much as possible and minimize our health care costs through better living .

Delivering his National Budget speech in Parliament in Cape Town on Wednesday, Finance Minister Pravin Gordhan announced both some tax relief for small business and a new financing agency to improve funding for the sector.
The tax-free threshold for small business corporations will be increased to R63556, while the 10% rate is reduced to 7% - the threshold up to which this rate is applied is increased to R350000.
For taxable income above R350000, the usual 28% corporate tax rate will still apply.
The payment of tax has also been simplified for micro enterprises. From next month, qualifying micro-businesses - those that fall within the R1-million turnover limit - will be able to pay turnover tax, VAT and employees' tax twice a year.
"This means that the number of returns and payments a year will be reduced from 18 to just two," said Gordhan.
Although Capital Gains Tax (CGT) for companies was increased from 50% to 66.6% and for individuals from 25% to 33.3%, the exclusion threshold for the disposal of a small business when a person is over the age of 55 has been increased from R900000 to R1.8-million, and the maximum market value of assets allowed for a small business disposal for business owners over 55 has been lifted from R5-million to R10-million.
Gordhan also said that the consolidation of small business financing into a new subsidiary under the Industrial Development Corporation (IDC) would benefit small firms.
President Jacob Zuma told Parliament earlier this month that the agency was expected to launch in April.

Muscle building versus strength training - is there a difference? I pose this question because of there seems to be some confusion on this subject.
As a backdrop, I recently read an article in which the writer emphatically stated that there is a difference. Those looking to strength training should be do more no than 3 to 5 reps a set, to include warming up with a set of 3 or 5 reps. He states that strength trainers should not do forced repetitions and the like.
His contention is that for those seeking to build muscle should be doing between 8 to 12 reps, and so forth. But mostly, his discussion was on what it took to build strength.
I think he misses the point. Had his discussion been about the training differences between power lifters and bodybuilders, perhaps he might have been closer to the mark. But for the general public, it was largely an irrelevant argument.
After all, most of us do not aspire to put on as much muscle as human possible nor is it to push the limits of how much a person can lift - although it may become a goal at a point. Rather, for a plethora of reasons, we want to look good, feel great, and be strong.
And to do that requires understanding this one fundamental truth, "it ain't rocket science." Or maybe it is, but I know this; this is a fairly straightforward proposition.
You exercise with enough intensity to challenge your body. You feed your body with enough nutrients to rebuild. And lastly, you get enough rest to allow your body to adapt and respond. That is it.
What, I think, is important is not to get lose sight of the forest by focusing too much on the trees. Rep schemes, exercise mix, and the like are not that critical to getting into shape.
You could to 1 set of 100 repetitions for the squat (good luck), 5 sets of 20 reps, or 10 sets of 10 reps. You could even do 6 sets of 20, 15, 10, 8, 6, and 6; or even a set of 15, 12, 10 and 8. They are all good. In fact, you could rotate what you do every few workouts, or every few months, to keep challenging yourself.
What is important is that for every workout that you do; you must do more than your last workout. That means you must do one more rep or lift one more pound or rest less. You must beat your last workout.
Whether you are maximizing your fast twitch muscle fibers and the like is getting lost in the weeds. Stay focused on hitting your body hard every workout, and doing it a just a bit harder each time.
After that, it's what happens after the work out that count. HIIT is a good example.
HIIT is so intense that for many hours after you finish, your body is still keyed up. Your body is still working to burn fat and making your body more efficient for the next HIIT session. And that's the value of training as intensely as you can each time.
That principle holds true whether you are doing sprints, circuit training, or the conventional weightlifting program.
As for the discussion of strength training versus muscle building - well - for most of us, it is not mutually exclusive. In fact, both are part and parcel of what we should be doing. We want to look good, feel great, and be strong.
I recommend days when you keep your reps in the 8 to 20 range and days when you hang in the 6 to 15 range. While there is great value to 5X5 work outs, I think a set of high rep, light weight warm-up is always advisable to start a set. Some exceptions obviously, such as there is less of a need to warm-up your biceps if you have just done a great back routine.
As you progressively challenge yourself, you will grow muscles and get stronger to your genetic potential. Your diet and intake of nutrients will determine how much fat you lose in the process. Exercise, diet, and rest all work together to get you where you want to go.
The rest of the stuff is just not really that important.

Mitochondria, tiny structures within each cell that regulate metabolism and energy use, may be a promising new target for cancer therapy, according to a new study. Manipulation of two biochemical signals that regulate the numbers of mitochondria in cells could shrink human lung cancers transplanted into mice, a team of Chicago researchers report in the journal FASEB.
Within each cell, mitochondria are constantly splitting in two, a process called fission, and merging back into one, called fusion. Before a cell can divide, the mitochondria must increase their numbers through fission and separate into two piles, one for each cell.
By reversing an imbalance of the signals that regulate fusion and fission in rapidly dividing cancer cells, researchers were able to dramatically reduce cell division, thus preventing the rapid cell proliferation that is a hallmark of cancer growth. Increasing production of the signal that promotes mitochondrial fusion caused tumors to shrink to one-third of their original size. Treatment with a molecule that inhibits fission reduced tumor size by more than half.
"We found that human lung cancer cell lines have an imbalance of signals that tilts them towards mitochondrial fission," said Stephen L. Archer, MD, the Harold Hines Jr. Professor of Medicine at the University of Chicago Medicine and senior author of the study. "By boosting the fusion signal or blocking the fission signal we were able to tip the balance the other way, reducing cancer cell growth and increasing cell death. We believe this provides a promising new approach to cancer treatment."
"This could be a potential new Achilles' heel for cancer cells," said the study's lead author, Jalees Rehman, MD, an associate professor of medicine and pharmacology at the University of Illinois at Chicago. "Many anticancer drugs target cell division. Our work shifts the focus to a distinct but necessary step: mitochondrial division. The cell division cycle comes to a halt if the mitochondria are prevented from dividing. This new therapy may be especially useful in cancers which become resistant to conventional chemotherapy that directly targets the cycle."
The researchers found that the mitochondrial networks within several different lung cancer cell lines were highly fragmented, compared to normal lung cells. Cancer cells had low levels of mitofusin-2 (Mfn-2), a protein that promotes fusion by tethering adjacent mitochondria, and high levels of dynamin-related protein (Drp-1), which initiates fission by encircling the organelle and squeezing it into two discrete fragments. The Drp-1 in cancer cells also tended to be in its most active form.
The researchers tested several ways to enhance fusion and restore the mitochondrial network, both in cell culture and in animal models. They used gene therapy to increase the expression of Mfn-2, injected a small molecule (mdivi-1) that inhibits Drp-1, and used genetic techniques to block the production of Drp-1. All three interventions markedly reduced mitochondrial fragmentation, increased networking and reduced cancer cell growth.
Although the authors identify mitochondrial fission and Drp-1 activation as a potential therapeutic target in lung cancer, "this is not a cure," Archer emphasized. The treatment drastically reduced tumor size but the tumors did not completely disappear. "This remnant could be either a central cluster of cancer stem cells," Archer said, "or an inflammatory response, the immune system infiltrating the tumor."
"Inhibiting mitochondrial fission", Archer said, "did not show any significant toxicity in mice or rats, so we are quite optimistic that our findings can lead to the development of novel, clinically feasible therapies."
The substances used to block fusion are commercially available for research purposes, but they have not been tested in humans. Mdivi-1 has been used in animals to prevent kidney injury.
Although the focus on mitochondria is fairly new to cancer biologists?despite a flurry of interest in the 1920s stimulated by the German Nobel Prize laureate Otto Warburg?this organelle has long been a central focus for physicians and scientists interested in muscle biology, especially cardiac muscle.
Archer, a cardiologist, specializes in pulmonary hypertension. In this disorder, as in cancer, excessive cellular growth causes disease. The death of his cousin and close friend from lung cancer made him start thinking about the connections. Rehman is a German scientist and became interested in studying mitochondria after reading some of the historical Warburg papers in German.
The fact that two cardiologists, Archer and Rehman, decided to study cancer and collaborated with a team of basic scientists, a cancer physician and a pathologist is "an indicator of how interconnected modern biomedical research has become," Rehman said.

SHANGHAI (AP) ? A Chinese company fighting Apple Inc. over its use of the iPad trademark in China took its complaints to a Shanghai court Wednesday, though it says it is willing to talk about a settlement.
Shenzhen Proview Technology claims ownership over the iPad name. Apple says it bought the rights to the name in China and other countries in 2009, but that Proview failed to transfer the rights in mainland China as agreed.
Proview accuses Apple of acting dishonestly when it bought rights to the iPad name from its Taiwan affiliate and is seeking to prevent sales of the popular tablet computers in China. It has filed lawsuits in several places and has requested that commercial authorities in 40 cities block iPad sales.
Shanghai's Pudong district court convened a hearing on the issue early Wednesday.
Meanwhile, Apple has appealed an earlier ruling against it in a court in Shenzhen, a city in southern China's Guangdong province. The Guangdong High Court is due to hear that case on Feb. 29.
According to Xie Xianghui, a lawyer for Proview, late last week a lower court in Huizhou, another city in Guangdong, ruled that distributors should stop selling iPads in China.
But that ruling may not have a far-reaching effect since the High Court appeal is still pending.
Xie has also said that since no final decisions have been reached in various legal disputes over the issue, both sides are "still able to sit together and reach an out-of-court settlement."
The trademark case is highlighting mixed attitudes toward Apple in China. Chinese are just as crazy about iPads and iPhones as consumers anywhere else and the devices are manufactured in China, employing hundreds of thousands of people.
But public awareness has been growing of criticism over the labor and environmental practices of huge factories that assemble the devices. Major Apple supplier Foxconn Technology Group, a Taiwan company, under intense scrutiny after a spate of worker suicides, recently raised wages by up to 25 percent in the second major salary hike in less than two years.
Many in China expect the two sides to eventually reach a settlement rather than continue to battle in the courts.
Apple, based in Cupertino, California, insists it holds the trademark rights to the iPad in China, having purchased them through a company set up for that purpose for 35,000 British pounds ($55,000).
A court in Hong Kong, which has a separate legal system from mainland China, ruled in July that Proview had acted with the intention of "injuring Apple."
Proview, a maker of LCDs, registered the iPad trademark in China in 2001 for an "Internet Personal Access Device" computer that employed touch panel technology. It contends that the 2009 sale was not legally binding.
So far, iPads have been pulled from shelves in some Chinese cities but there has been no sign of action at the national level.
