Most of the time a base shoe is installed after the cabinets are all set. This looks like a quarter round...it is 3/4" high x 1/2" thick with a rounded top edge. This piece hides any shimming that was done on the cabinets. It should hide the gap on the island. I am guessing the company made the base 1/4" shy just for ease of installation. I have seen some installations where they leave the gap at the top, sloppy as it is, expecting that people won't see up under the toe space.
