The 2012 Avnet Tech Games Winners Announced - Arizona Venture ...

?Avnet, Inc. (NYSE:AVT), a leading global technology distributor, has announced the 2012 winners of the Avnet Tech Games. Nearly 190 students from Arizona and other U.S. community colleges and universities competed head-to-head for top honors in the Avnet Tech Games onsite and virtual competition on Saturday, April 14, 2012, at The University of Advancing Technology in Tempe, Ariz. Twenty winning students collected scholarships in values up to $1,000 each.

A panel of judges including technology firm executives, engineers and technical experts selected the winners based on the students? ability to meet the technical requirements of the task, apply innovative approaches to the solution and demonstrate professional skills. Seventy-five teams of students competed in the onsite and virtual Avnet Tech Games, including 11 Arizona community colleges and universities: Arizona State University, ITT Technical Institute, six Maricopa County Community Colleges, Northern Arizona University, The University of Advancing Technology and University of Arizona.

Since the Avnet Tech Games? inception in 2006, more than $225,000 in scholarships and prizes have been awarded to hundreds of the approximately 1,800 students and 170 faculty members who have participated in the Games. ?There is only so much one can learn in the classroom, and the one thing more important than ever before when it comes to getting a job upon graduation is real-world experience,? said Teri Radosevich, vice president of community relations and public affairs for Avnet, Inc. ?The Avnet Tech Games test the abilities of students in applying classroom knowledge to real-life scenarios, while also giving them the opportunity to establish business connections with peers and industry pros. It?s a win-win-win where students learn invaluable job skills, schools can better align academic curricula with business realities and the technology industry benefits because graduates are better prepared for the workplace.?

The annual multidisciplinary technology competition, composed of seven separate events, requires students to work in teams to test their knowledge, creativity, decision-making, problem-solving and technical skills. During the event, students showcased how they can make a difference in advancing business and improving quality of life by participating in competitions, such as creating a solar-powered water-pumping system, presenting plans for a green data center and constructing a virtual server environment.

2012 Spring Virtual Avnet Tech Games

The virtual games were introduced in 2010 to expand the breadth of the onsite Avnet Tech Games by allowing students to compete on a national level without having to attend the onsite competition.

Competitors had their work displayed onsite and the winners were announced during the award ceremony for the onsite games. Each of the spring winners also received a scholarship of up to $1,000 each.
