94% The Queen of Versailles

All Critics (62) | Top Critics (24) | Fresh (58) | Rotten (4)

"The Queen of Versailles" ought to be required viewing for anyone who blames the rich for yanking the rug out from under America's economy.

What I left with was not hatred. I disapprove of the values they represent, but I also find them fascinating and just slightly lovable.

"The Queen of Versailles" turns out to be a portrait -- appalling, absorbing and improbably affecting -- of how, even within a system seemingly designed to ensure that the rich get richer, sometimes the rich get poorer.

Through a clear lens unclouded by politics or blame, it offers insight into the hazardous American practice of living beyond our means.

There's more going on here than classist derision, and the filmmaker uses her footage to try to sort out her feelings.

The Queen of Versailles combines the voyeuristic thrills of reality TV with the soul-revealing artistry of great portraiture and the head-shaking revelations of solid investigative reporting.

It would be easy to look at this with smug satisfaction, but director Lauren Greenfield is impassive.

Surely more topical (and essential) now than when it was conceived, The Queen of Versailles plays like a Christopher Guest parody of the financial crisis.

Watching "The Queen of Versailles" you don't know whether to laugh or cry.

Whatever their crimes of bad taste, they had it, flaunted it, lost it, and lived to tell the tale.

The pride, gluttony and inexplicable romance in the tale are almost Shakespearean.

By the end, the movie has pulled off a small miracle: You become absorbed in the lives of these people for who they are and not what they own.

In director Lauren Greenfield's tremendous documentary packed with terrific details, greed is not good. It is a slow, self-inflicted wound whose pain hits hard and fast.

A well-told tale about having to atone for sins of the sub-prime era.

A tragicomic indulgence of schadenfreude with the sophistication of a Kardashian reality show.

The result is a rich portrait.

A dysfunctional family documentary which invites the audience to take pleasure in the misfortunes of some decidedly-decadent 1%ers.

There are improbably involving human stories here.

It transforms from a mocking portrait of exorbitance into a sympathetic depiction of a family struggling with their own version of what most of us have gone through.

Aerial photos reveal dynamic Greenland ice sheet: Ice sheet has recently retreated then restabilized

ScienceDaily (Aug. 2, 2012) ? Despite the current and rapid melting of the Greenland Ice Sheet, it remains far from certain just when we will have reached a point when scientists will be able to predict its disappearance. Recent research conducted by the University of Copenhagen in conjunction with the Technical University of Denmark (DTU) and the Danish National Survey and Cadastre (KMS) in collaboration with an international team of scientists reports that this is not the first time in recent history that the ice sheet has been in retreat and then stabilised again.

The researchers' results have just been published in Science.

Describing the findings, University of Copenhagen Associate Professor Kurt H. Kj?r at Professor Eske Willerslevs Centre for GeoGenetics at the Natural History Museum of Denmark asserts:

"That air temperatures have increased and melting has intensified is relatively well-understood. On the other hand, the UN's climate panel, the IPCC, has for many years called for greater knowledge in relation to the other major effect on the Greenland Ice Sheet -- the 'thinning of the ice sheet' which is the effect of the largest glaciers in Greenland flowing faster into the ocean than previously measured. Over the past three years a number of scientific articles have addressed the issue and pointed to a sea-level rise of one metre or more. These reports presuppose that the melting will accelerate to the same degree as during the past decade. This is a question to which we have been able to provide a qualified answer. It turns out that the ice sheet, in relation to this point, behaves more dynamically and is able to more quickly stabilise itself in comparison to what many other models and computer calculations otherwise predict."

Denmark under water

No less than 240 billion tons of fresh water escape their solid state within the Greenland Ice Sheet and runoff or discharge as icebergs into the world's oceans each year. This amount corresponds to a 5.6 meter annual rise in water level if distributed over the surface area of Denmark, an area of approximately 43,000 km2.

Current melting attributable to global warming is so great that some experts warn that we are headed towards an irreversible "tipping point" -- a point at which the global climate is permanently transformed, a point at which low-lying cities and coastal zones around the world will be seriously threatened in 100 years time.

As recently as one year ago this scenario was presented in Copenhagen at a scientific conference organised by the Arctic Council, the University of Copenhagen and Aarhus University, a conference involving over 400 climate researchers from 20 countries.

A problem to be taken more than seriously

Among the somber tones and gloomier outlooks, the recent research findings out of the University of Copenhagen and the Technical University of Denmark (DTU) in conjunction with an international team of researchers, show that the Greenland Ice Sheet is more robust than researchers have otherwise been able to predict using models and computer-based calculations.

The new research findings were obtained by combining contemporary satellite data with old aerial photographs of the ice sheet in northwestern Greenland, one of two hotspots for ice sheet thinning and heavy glacial melt runoff.

Senior researcher Shfaqat Abbas Khan of the Technical University of Denmark (DTU) says of the research results: "We've used a combination of old aerial photographs from the 80's to construct a digital elevation map and recent satellite data. In this way we've been able to gain an overview of the thinning of the ice sheet over the last 30 years in northwestern Greenland. We are the first who have been able to show that the Greenland Ice Sheet was on as a dramatic diet at the end of the 80's as it is today. On the positive side our results show that despite a significant thinning in peripheral regions from 1985-1992; the thinning slowed and then died out."

Old photos

Associate Professor Kurt H. Kj?r of the University of Copenhagen had the idea to create new and comparable elevation models of the ice sheet along a 700 km long stretch of the northwestern Greenland coast using the old photos. This provided researchers with a relatively simple way of revealing more of the ice sheet's secrets in comparison to other new methods.

Kurt H. Kj?r says: "Our results show that the thinning of the ice sheet at the end of the 80's and beginning of the 90's eased over a 4-8 year period, after which a period of stability occurred until 2003. Our conclusion is therefore, that if we judged against longer periods of time, the current thinning of the ice sheet is likely to ease within an 8-year period."

"These variations in the amount of thinning that we are able to document since the 80's make it difficult to predict how much the world's oceans will rise over a longer period of time -- a century for instance -- as a result of Greenland glacial melt-water runoff. However, it is certain that many of the present calculations and computer models of ice sheet conditions that built upon a short range of years since 2000 must be reassessed. It is too early to proclaim the 'ice sheet's future doom' and subsequent contribution to serious water problems for the world. In this context it should be mentioned that the Greenland bedrock rises as the ice sheet in the peripheral regions and especially near the coast is in retreat and becoming thinner. This highlights the enormous forces that are at play in Greenland and of how difficult it is to predict what it means for Greenland as well as the rest of the world," says Associate Professor Kurt H. Kj?r of the Natural History Museum of Denmark, University of Copenhagen.

Egypt's little known new PM a surprise pick

Before his appointment as Egypt's prime minister, little was known about Hisham Qandil, an irrigation minister who last made headlines for persuading a suicidal employee not to jump out of a window.

Qandil, who selected his new cabinet on Wednesday, is now charged with accomplishing an ambitious promise by President Mohamed Morsi to improve security and the livelihoods of Egyptians in the space of several months.

For weeks after Morsi took office on June 30, the Egyptian media surmised he would pick a premier from a list of better known candidates who would satisfy a mercurial coalition of allies that reluctantly supported his election.

The choice of the technocrat Qandil disappointed Morsi's secular allies, the more so because the new premier may, like Morsi, be an Islamist.

A closely cropped beard with no moustache -- in the fashion of ultra-devout Muslims in Egypt -- adorns Qandil's face. Born in 1962, he is a fledgling when measured in Egyptian politician years.

His recent appearances in rather oversized suits have accentuated his young age compared with his hoary predecessor Kamal Ganzouri, who once declared that although many youths had not heard of him, their parents certainly had.

Qandil was a senior manager at the African Development Bank before heading Egypt's Nile Water Sector. He was appointed a minister in 2011 after president Hosni Mubarak's overthrow in a popular uprising.

The state newspaper Al-Ahram reported in June that Qandil had intervened to talk an employee out of jumping from the eighth floor of the ministry.

A father of five, Qandil graduated from Cairo University's faculty of engineering before doing post-graduate studies in the United States.

In 1993, he received a doctorate from the University of North Carolina.

Qandil has been forced to deny that he is a member of Morsi's Muslim Brotherhood, or that he belonged to any party, but that has not stopped Egyptians from gossiping about the new premier's dogma.

On social networking sites, Qandil is said to be so devout that he banned his children from listening to Western music, and that he does not even own a television.

Such gossip is impossible to verify, but it is a sign of suspicion towards Morsi, who barely won the election after many voters supported his rival, former Mubarak premier Ahmed Shafiq, in an attempt to block the Islamists from office.

After his appointment last week, Qandil called for support from all Egyptians and stressed that his government would comprise technocrats.

Wall Street takes a hit from ECB disappointment

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Stocks fell for a fourth day on Thursday after European Central Bank President Mario Draghi disappointed investors hoping for immediate action to contain the euro zone debt crisis.

One of Wall Street's top market makers, Knight Capital Group , was fighting for its survival after a trading glitch that roiled markets on Wednesday wiped out $440 million of the firm's capital.

However, the market focused mostly on the ECB, though traders were also looking ahead to Friday's closely watched U.S. jobs report which could bring a volatile end to an eventful week.

Draghi said the ECB would gear up to buy Italian and Spanish bonds on the open market but would only act after euro zone governments have activated bailout funds to do the same, disappointing traders after his pledge last week to do "whatever it takes" to save the euro left many thinking action was imminent.

"Today people were looking for concrete steps and an outline of exactly what path the ECB would take to do that, and there weren't any," said Brian Gendreau, market strategist with Cetera Financial Group in Gainesville, Florida.

"Just as the market went up on the 'whatever it takes' comments it is coming down on the lack of specificity."

Markets rallied late last week in part on hopes for stimulus from the Federal Reserve but mostly as expectations grew the ECB would take action to protect the euro. Friday's jobs report could give a stronger indication whether the Fed, which has a freer hand than the ECB, will act shortly.

Data showed the number of Americans filing new claims for jobless benefits rose last week and manufacturers suffered an unexpected drop in orders in June, suggesting the economy is struggling to break out of a soft patch.

The Dow Jones industrial average <.dji> fell 92.18 points, or 0.71 percent, to 12,878.88. The S&P 500 Index <.spx> dropped 10.14 points, or 0.74 percent, to 1,365.00. The Nasdaq Composite <.ixic> lost 10.44 points, or 0.36 percent, to 2,909.77.

Major indexes fell for a fourth day running, totaling weekly losses so far of more than 1.5 percent.

Knight Capital shares fell after Wednesday's trading error forced the company to seek new funding. The stock closed down 62.8 percent at $2.58, their lowest since early October 1998.

According to Thomson Reuters data, 67 percent of the 385 S&P 500 components that have reported results so far this quarter have beat earnings estimates. In the past four quarters, the average beat rate has been 68 percent.

General Motors Co posted a smaller-than-expected loss in Europe that helped the No. 1 U.S. automaker post a better-than-expected second-quarter profit. Shares slipped 2.6 percent to $19.14.

Gap Inc jumped 12.8 percent to $33.17 after the clothing retailer posted its July and second-quarter sales, but rival Aeropostale plummeted 32.8 percent to $13.08 after cutting its second-quarter forecast.

U.S. retailers reported stronger-than-expected sales for July but the gains were largely due to discounting and do not necessarily signal vigorous consumer spending for the rest of the year.

About 7.1 billion shares exchanged hands on the New York Stock Exchange, NYSE MKT and Nasdaq, above the year-to-date daily average of 6.75 billion.

About 8 issues fell for every 5 that rose on the NYSE and on Nasdaq the decline/advance ratio was roughly 7 to 5.
