Report: Apple to release 7.85-inch iPad in October

9 hrs.

iPad Mini? iPad Nano? iPad Air? We don't really know what Apple will call the smaller version of its popular tablet, but we've got a pile of reports from anonymous sources to suggest that the device is actually coming. The latest of these reports claims that the shiny new iPad will be a 7.85-inch gadget.

Bloomberg's Tim Culpan writes that four people familiar with Apple's plans listed out the companies which may supply parts for the device and in the process revealed its diagonal?measurement.

The detail fits with what we've heard before, that the smaller iPad will be close to eight inches diagonally (rather than 9.7 inches like the current models).?

Leaked parts have also?suggested?that the device will use a 19-pin connector like the next-generation iPhone and be offered in a choice of black or white.?Both 9to5?Mac's Seth Weintraub and Apple watcher?John Gruber?agree that chances are high that this smaller tablet will look a lot like a large iPod Touch, with?a smaller bezel.

Of course, the folks at?Apple certainly haven't given any official word regarding the existence of a smaller iPad. ?(It's their policy not to address such rumors, after all.)?So, for now just pick your favorite bit of gossip and let's keep speculating until the cows come home ? or until the Apple executives come to the Moscone Center for an?announcement.

Want more tech news?or interesting?links? You'll get plenty of both if you keep up with Rosa Golijan, the writer of this post, by following her on?Twitter, subscribing to her?Facebook?posts,?or circling her?on?Google+.

Kumare ? A Documentary About Faith And Empowerment ...

Recently, I went with a friend to see a documentary about a filmmaker who wanted to prove that religion and religious leaders weren?t necessary. The young man created an identity of a wise guru for himself. To spread his message that each person was his/her own guru, he began attracting students.

Because of the way he spoke and acted, people believed in his performance and that he was a spiritual guru. People assumed he was a spiritual master because that?s what they expected to see. His followers accepted the way he defined himself and projected onto him their ideas of what a guru could do.

As he engaged with his followers, he accepted them unconditionally. This gave them the safety to begin to change. He communicated that he believed in them, which was in line with his message that they were their own gurus. But he also listened to them, which allowed them to feel seen. By doing this, he empowered them to believe in themselves.

The connection with his students, and what he shared with them, transformed them. These connections were powerful and changed him, too. We each have the power and knowledge within us to improve our lives, but we may not believe that we can do it. Sometimes we need someone to believe in and accept us to enable us to believe in ourselves.

The filmmaker wants to reveal himself to them, but he cares about them and is concerned about how it will affect the changes they?ve made. How will his ultimate message be received? Kumare is a fascinating documentary. It shows the power of our connections with other people and how they can transform our lives.

How To Get Your Ph.D. Project Included In The Linux Kernel

CephThe Linux kernel is the world's largest collaborative development project. Almost 3,000 individual contributors work together to create and maintain an operating system kernel that works on everything from wristwatches and mobile phones to mainframes, along with all the peripherals imaginable for each platform. Linux creator Linus Torvalds sits at the top of a loose hierarchy of kernel maintainers and acts as final arbiter for what does or does not get included. So how does one go about contributing a substantially new technology to the kernel?

Twitter to let advertisers target tweeters

1 hr.

Twitter will begin allowing advertisers to directly target users based on the interests they reveal in their tweets, the social media company said Thursday.

In an effort to draw advertisers to its paid ads program, the company also slashed the minimum price of "promoted tweets" to just a penny.

No longer content to be a "dumb" bulletin board, with 400 million micro-messages posted daily, Twitter has moved to a strategy of actively sifting through what each user is reading and tweeting in order to discern every individual's interests.

Google has long reaped huge profits by displaying ads based on what a user searches for in its search engine, while Facebook, a Twitter competitor, encourages users to proactively input their "likes." But Twitter has long faced the challenge of indirectly inferring these preferences.

Twitter will now allow companies to send paid ads in the forms of tweets to groups of users, bunched in more than 350 interest categories curated by Twitter itself.

CEO Dick Costolo has said in recent months that his company's value lies in its ability to mine its flow of information to build "an interest graph" showing its users' preference profiles -- which could be used by marketers to deliver targeted and relevant ads.

For instance, sports apparel retailers can target soccer fanatics for promotions, or film distributors might send tweets directed at keen Bollywood fans.

The new offering will allow companies to reach a "very narrow, very specific and incredibly focused audience," Kevin Weil, a Twitter director of product management, said in an interview.

Twitter engineers believe they can build a compelling ad delivery platform, particularly if marketers craft ads that seem to blend in with the tone and format of the service's flow of tweets, which are seen by some 140 million monthly active users.

In building its interest graph, Twitter analyzes "a host of signals," Weil said, including which accounts a user follows, as well as the subjects of tweets that are most frequently recirculated or replied to by the user.

The company's algorithms closely evaluate the latter, giving "a direct measure of what you're interested in," Weil said.

Between 1 and 3 percent of users who see a "promoted tweet" -- a paid ad -- click on the tweet in some way. But early beta tests have shown the engagement rate to be higher when tweets are directed using its new interest-targeting tool, Weil said, while declining to discuss specific results.

Valued at more than $8 billion but expected by analysts to make less than $300 million in revenue in 2011, Twitter has aggressively ramped up its advertising capabilities. But in streamlining its product to better show ads, the company has cracked down on how third-party services may use its content, sparking an outcry from Silicon Valley technologists who would like Twitter to remain a neutral media platform.

In protest against what they viewed as a Twitter experience increasingly corrupted by advertising, software developers in California this month launched App.net, a Twitter-like rival that is supported by a $50 membership fee rather than ads.

2012 London Paralympics: World Records Falling At High Rate; Benoit Huot, Natalie Du Toit, Jessica Long Sophie Pascoe Among Stars

LONDON, England, August 30. THE first evening of competition at the 2012 London Paralympics featured some of the top swimming in the world as global records fell at a strong clip.

China's Zheng Tao started off the first evening right with a world record in the men's 100 back S6 division. He raced to a victorious time of 1:13.56, clearing the previous standard of 1:13.99 set by Russia's Igor Plotnikov at the 2004 Athens Paralympics. China's Jia Hongguang finished second in 1:14.64 for a Chinese 1-2 in the event, while Germany's Sebastian Iwanow picked up third in 1:15.95.

China picked up its second consecutive world record and gold medal to start the evening when Lu Dong smashed the global standard with a blazing 1:24.71 in the women's 100 back S6 finale. That effort undercut the 1:26.19 set by The Netherlands' Mirjam de Koning-Peper in Berlin in 2011, as well as crushed de Koning-Peper's Games record of 1:28.34 set at the 2008 Beijing Paralympics. Great Britain's Nyree Kindred earned second-place honors with a 1:26.23, just off the world-record pace, while de Koning-Peper rounded out the podium with a bronze-winning 1:29.04. Lu first broke onto the international scene as part of China's 2010 world title in the 200 medley relay 20 points. Lu lost both of her arms in a car accident as a child.

Russia's Sergey Punko, who set the world and Paralympics record in the event with a 4:08.64 in 2008, defended his title in the men's 400 free S12 with a strong 4:10.26 this evening. Spain's Enrique Floriano placed a distant second in 4:14.77, while Ukraine's Sergii Klippert snagged third in 4:17.12. Punko is a veteran of Paralympic competition, having first earned an international gold with a 400 free triumph at the 2004 Paralympics. He has a congenital progressive eye disability that certified him with an S12 status in 2002. In sum, Punko has now earned four Paralympic gold medals, with a total tally of 11 Paralympic medals. He won his first world title in 2006 with four victories that year in the 400 free, 100 breast, 200 IM and 5K open water events that year. He also claimed four silvers. In 2010, he won two more world titles in the 400 free and 5k open water events. Punko was named Swimming World's Disabled Swimmer of the Year in 2003.

Russia's Oxana Savchenko kept the women's 400 free S12 title in her country with a near-world record performance of 4:37.89. That swim came up shy of compatriot Anna Efimenko's global standard of 4:37.37 set at the 2008 Beijing Paralympics, but was plenty good enough to earn Russia its second straight gold tonight. Great Britain's Hannah Russell, buoyed by a huge ovation from the London crowd, snared silver in 4:38.60, while Spain's Deborah Font completed the podium with a third-place 4:39.75. Defending champ Efimenko placed fourth in 4:51.29.

France's Charles Rozoy held off a Chinese trio with a powerful final 15 meters in the men's 100 fly S8 finale. He clocked a time of 1:01.24 for the victory, then celebrated like Cesar Cielo by riding the laneline and kissing his bicep. China's Wei Yanpeng placed a close second in 1:01.66, while teammate Song Maodang earned bronze with a 1:01.99. China's Wang Jiachao just missed the podium with a 1:02.00. Rozoy first broke onto the international Paralympic scene at the 2009 World Short Course Championships. He won this event there, as well as took bronzes in the 50 and 100 free. He also took bronze in the 100 fly S8 at the 2010 long course championships. Rozoy lost his arm in a motorcycle accident in July 2008, and returned to swimming with one arm in January 2009.

The United States jumped to the top of the podium for the first time this evening as Paralympic star Jessica Long demolished the Games record in the women's 100 fly S8 with a sterling 1:10.32. That performance blasted the 1:11.64 set by teammate Amanda Everlove at the 2008 Beijing Paralympics. Long's time missed her global standard of 1:10.13 set in Winnipeg earlier this summer. Ukraine's Kateryna Istomina wound up with silver in 1:11.53, while China's Jiang Shengnan claimed bronze with a 1:13.28. Defending champion Everlove placed eighth in 1:18.56.

Long's win pushed her career Paralympic medal tally to 10, with eight of the gold variety. She won four golds in 2008, and three golds in 2004. She also picked up a silver and a bronze in 2008. Long became the first Paralympian to won the AAU's James E. Sullivan Award as the top amateur athlete in the U.S. in 2006, and she also won Swimming World's 2006 and 2011 Disabled Swimmer of the Year titles. This year, Long won an ESPY as the top Female Athlete with a Disability.

Great Britain's Jonathan Fox missed his prelim world record of 1:10.45 by the slimmest of margins with a triumphant time of 1:10.46 to secure the men's 100 back S7 triumph. Fox charged out early, then held on as Ukraine's Yevheniy Bohodayko turned on the afterburners down the stretch. Bohodayko snatched silver with a time of 1:11.31, while Croatia's Mihovil Spanja completed the podium with a bronze-winning outing of 1:12.53. The swim proved to be a crowd favorite with the packed stands erupting at the finish in support of Fox. Fox, who has cerebral palsy, has been swimming since the age of 11 as part of his therapy. He won the 2010 world title in this event as well, and was the silver medalist at the 2008 Paralympic Games.

Australia heard its national anthem for the first time after the women's 100 back S7 with a Paralympic Games mark of 1:22.84 from Jacqueline Freney. That performance eclipsed the previous standard of 1:24.30 set by compatriot Katrina Porter in 2008. Germany's Kirsten Bruhn, the world-record holder with a sterling 1:21.57 from April of this year, settled for silver with a 1:25.22. USA's Cortney Jordan rounded out the medal-winners with a 1:25.33.

Freney, who has been a standout in the Paralympic movement since winning three bronzes (50, 100, 400 free) in 2008, earned her first international title. She placed second in the 100 and 400 free events in 2010, and took four silvers and two bronzes at the 2009 short course championships. Bruhn, meanwhile, has been competing at the international level since 2004, where she took gold in the 100 breast SB5, a pair of silvers and a bronze. In total, she now has won 10 career Paralympic medals with her silver tonight. Bruhn moved into the Paralympic world as an athlete in 1991 when she was involved in a motorcycle accident ending in permanent damage to her spinal cord.

Defending champion Tamas Sors of Hungary captured the men's 100 fly S9 crown with a scorching effort of 59.54. That swim just missed Sors' world record of 59.23 set last summer, as well as his Games record of 59.34 to win the event in 2008. Australia's Matthew Cowdrey cleared 1:00 as well to win silver in 59.91, while Italy's Federico Morlacchi earned bronze in 1:00.77.

Sors now has four Paralympic medals on his resume, having won the 100 fly in 2008 and 2012, as well as taking bronze in the 100 and 400 free in 2008. He also won the 100 fly S9 event at the 2010 World Long Course Championships after first taking bronze in the event in 2006. He also captured the short course world title in 2009. Sors was born without a lower left arm. Cowdrey, meanwhile, now has a stunning 15 career Paralympic medals with his silver this evening. He has won eight golds, five silvers and two bronzes. Cowdrey, born with a congenital amputation below the elbow of his left arm, is one of the top Paralympians of all time. On top of his eight Paralympic golds, he also has won 11 world long course titles and seven world short course crowns.

South Africa's Natalie du Toit captured an incredible 11th Paralympic gold medal with a triumphant time of 1:09.30 in the women's 100 fly S9 finale. That gave her a third straight victory in the event's history. Du Toit became the first amputee to ever qualify for the Olympic Games when she competed in the 10K open water event at the 2008 Beijing Olympics. She lost her left leg below her knee in a scooter accident in February 2001. Du Toit is now 11-for-12 in Paralympic gold medal opportunities. Her only non-gold medal came with a silver-medal 100 back S9 finish in 2004.

Spain's Sarai Gascon placed second in the event with a 1:09.79 to set the European record in the event -- her second career silver after a second-place 100 breast SB9 in 2008. USA's Elizabeth Stone downed the American record in the event with a bronze-winning 1:10.10. Stone also now has two career Paralympic medals after earning silver in the 100 back S9 in 2008. Australia's Ellie Cole set the Oceania record in the event with a fourth-place 1:10.40.

Canada's Benoit Huot clipped his world record in the men's 200 IM SM10 finale, then released a guttural shout of triumph after seeing his time on the scoreboard. Huot, who now has nine Paralympic gold medals dating back to a 50 free S10 victory in 2000, blasted the field with a scintillating time of 2:10.01. That swim bettered Huot's world record of 2:10.26 set in April this year in Montreal. Huot has now won the 200 IM SM10 event in three out of the last four Paralympics. He won in 2000, 2004 and took bronze in 2008. Incidentally, Huot's time smashed the previous Games record of 2:12.78 set by Australia's Rick Pendleton in 2008. Huot now has 17 career Paralympic medals. Brazil's Andre Brasil finished a distant second in 2:12.36, while Pendleton took third in 2:14.77.

New Zealand ascended to the top of the podium for the first time this evening as Sophie Pascoe obliterated her world record in the women's 200 IM SM10 event. She won by more than six seconds with a jaw-dropping time of 2:25.65. That swim demolished her previous world record of 2:29.35 set last August in Edmonton, and is the fastest Paralympics swim by nearly eight seconds. Jessica Sloan had held the previous Games standard with a 2:33.64 from Sydney back in 2000. Canada's Summer Mortimer turned in a silver-winning time of 2:32.08, which also surpassed the previous Games record, while China's Zhang Meng wound up third with an Asian record of 2:33.95.

Pascoe has now won four Paralympic golds, with a total tally of five medals including a silver in the 100 fly S10 in 2008. Tonight's win defended her victory in the event from 2008. Pascoe sustained her disability when she had her left leg amputated below the knee after an accident involving a lawnmower when she was just two years old.

Brazil's Daniel Dias crushed his previous world record in the men's 50 free S5 finale with a sterling time of 32.05. That performance eclipsed his previous mark of 32.27 set in Eindhoven in 2010. Dias had a stunning outing in 2008, where he captured nine Paralympic medals, including four golds. Tonight, he crossed into double digits overall, and now has five golds. He finished second in this event in 2008. Incidentally, Dias also lowered the Games record of 32.62 set by Spain's Sebastian Rodriguez in 2004. Rodriguez, meanwhile, won silver with a time of 33.44 for his 13th career Paralympic title, spanning back to a five gold-medal effort in 2000. USA's Roy Perkins finished third with a 33.69.

Ukraine's Natalia Prologaieva followed up Dias' scorcher with a world-record tying tally of 35.88 in the women's 50 free S5 finale. That swim matched the world and Games record of 35.88 set by Spain's Teresa Perales in 2008. Prologaieva is a relative newcomer to Paralympic swimming, first making a mark on the sport at the 2010 World Championships with four golds in the S5 and SM5 division. Perales, meanwhile, took silver in 36.50. Israel's Inbal Pezaro snared third-place honors with a 37.89.

China bookended the night as Du Jianping posted an Asian record time of 57.50 in the men's 50 breast SB2 division for the win. Mexico's Arnulfo Castorena, the reigning world-record holder set at the 2004 Athens Paralympics, took second in 58.23. Ukraine's Dmytro Vynohradets earned third in 58.51, a European record.

Scientists sequence the genome of Neandertal relatives, the Denisovans

A new report describes the complete sequence of the Denisovan genome, shedding light on the relationships between these archaic humans, who were closely related to Neandertals, and modern humans.

The results will be published online by the journal Science, in the 30 August 2012 edition of ScienceExpress. Science is the flagship journal of AAAS, the nonprofit science society.

Fossil evidence of the Denisovans is scanty; the existence of this group only came to light in 2010 when DNA from a piece of a finger bone and two molars that were excavated at Denisova Cave in the Altai Mountains of southern Siberia was studied.

Because they had only a tiny sample of material from the finger bone, Svante Pbo of the Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology in Leipzig, Germany and his research team developed a treatment that unzipped the DNA so that each of its two strands can be used to generate molecules for sequencing. This method allowed the team to generate an extremely thorough genome sequence (30X), similar in quality to what researchers can obtain for the modern human genome.

The researchers compared the Denisovan genome with those of several modern humans from around the world. The Denisovans share more genes with populations from the islands of southeastern Asia, including Melanesia and Australian Aborigines, than with populations elsewhere in Asia. Analysis of the Denisovan genome further illuminates the relationships of Neandertals with individuals from East Asia, South America and Europe.

The study reports several other findings. For example, the researchers generated a list of recent changes in the human genome that occurred after the split from the Denisovans, i.e. changes unique to modern humans. This list will help scientists understand what sets modern humans apart from Denisovans and Neandertals. They also show that the Denisovan individual whose genome was sequenced carried genetic variants that in present-day humans are associated with dark skin, brown hair and brown eyes, and that the genetic diversity of the Denisovans themselves was extremely low. Given the Denisovans' wide geographic range over time, it is likely that their population was initially quite small but grew quickly, without time for genetic diversity to increase.

If further research shows that the Neandertal population size changed over time in a similar way, that may suggest that a single population expanding out of Africa gave rise to both the Denisovans and Neandertals, the study authors say.

Updike's Pa. childhood home bought, museum planned

SHILLINGTON, Pa. (AP) ? John Updike's childhood home in Pennsylvania has been purchased by a group that plans to restore it and turn it into a museum.

The John Updike Society bought the home in Shillington, about 50 miles northwest of Philadelphia, for $180,000 on Monday. The Pulitzer Prize-winning author lived there until he was 13.

The society hopes the 1900 house can be preserved and re-created how it would have looked in Updike's youth. The Reading Eagle (http://bit.ly/Pn498I ) reports organizers will seek donated materials for display.

Best known for his novels chronicling the life of Harry "Rabbit" Angstrom, Updike won Pulitzers for two of those stories, "Rabbit Is Rich" and "Rabbit at Rest." He died in 2009 at age 76.

New cancer drug is ten times more potent

ScienceDaily (Aug. 29, 2012) ? Legend has it that Ralph Waldo Emerson once said, "Build a better mousetrap, and the world will beat a path to your door." University of Missouri researchers are doing just that, but instead of building mousetraps, the scientists are targeting cancer drugs. In a new study, MU medicinal chemists have taken an existing drug that is being developed for use in fighting certain types of cancer, added a special structure to it, and created a more potent, efficient weapon against cancer.

"Over the past decade, we have seen an increasing interest in using carboranes in drug design," said Mark W. Lee Jr., assistant professor of chemistry in College of Arts and Science. "Carboranes are clusters of three elements -- boron, carbon and hydrogen. Carboranes don't fight cancer directly, but they aid in the ability of a drug to bind more tightly to its target, creating a more potent mechanism for destroying the cancer cells."

In the study, Lee and his research team used carboranes to build new drugs designed to shut off a cancer cell's energy production, which is vital for the cell's survival. All cells produce energy through complex, multi-step processes. The key to an effective drug is targeting the process that cancer cells depend on more than healthy cells. By increasing the binding strength of a drug, a smaller dose is required, minimizing side effects and increasing the effectiveness of the therapy. With carboranes, Lee found that the drug is able to bind 10 times more powerfully.

"The reason why these drugs bind stronger to their target is because carboranes exploit a unique and very strong form of hydrogen bonding, the strongest form of interactions for drugs," Lee said.

Lee said that this discovery also will lead to further uses for the drug.

"Too often, after radiation or chemotherapy, cancer cells repair themselves and reinvade the body," Lee said. "This drug not only selectively shuts off the energy production for the cancer cells, but it also inhibits the processes that allow those cancer cells to repair themselves. When we tested our carborane-based drugs, we found that they were unimaginably potent. So far, we have tested this on breast, lung and colon cancer, all with exceptional results."

According to Lee, this is the first study to show systematically how carboranes can improve the activity of a drug. Lee believes this discovery will open additional possibilities of improving drugs that are used to treat other diseases, not just cancer.

"The end result is that these new drugs could be many thousands of times more potent than the drugs that are used in the clinics today," Lee said.

While it will be several years before the new drug would be available on the market, Lee said that clinical trials could begin within the next two years. Additionally, further testing on other types of cancer is underway. The study was published in the Journal of Medicinal Chemistry, a publication of the American Chemical Society.

Why is the synthetic track at Leonora? - Stabroek News - Guyana

Dear Editor,
Sir Ronald Sanders in his contribution to the Kaieteur News on August 12, 2012, shared with readers what he feels needs to be done if the Caribbean Community (Caricom) must sustain and improve its already stunning performance in track and field as was demonstrated recently at Olympic Games. Essentially he argues that it would be in the region?s interest if we pool our meagre resources into the creation of a modern facility, staffed by competent coaches designed to offer the region?s athletes our maximum support as they prepare themselves to do battle on our behalf against the rest of the world. His suggestion is sensible, laudable and attractive. But it is his observation that ?all countries that want their sports people to do well because of the pride it? brings to their people and the joy of seeing them win, have to invest in the facilities they need to become world champions,? that I want to focus on as it relates? to what is going on in Guyana.

The presence of a modern facility for track and field is not enough. If such a facility is to be meaningful, then where it is located is even more important. A seemingly obvious observation, so obvious that Sir Ronald did not feel it needed to be said. However, we who have been living in Guyana over the last sixteen years have come to recognize that our government for some strange reason many times seems to struggle with grasping the obvious.

The presence of an all-weather facility is both expensive and essential. Thus if Guyana must catch up with our Caribbean relatives who are taking the world by storm in track and field, we have no alternative but to seek to acquire same. There are at least three reasons why people take part in sporting activities and why governments promote sports. These are (a) sports for recreation and health, (b) sports for bonding and (c) sports for medals. While this facility will allow for activities falling in each of these categories, its cost, its importance to athletes would suggest its major purpose is to create a minimum appropriate training facility for athletes? use, as they prepare themselves for bringing glory to Guyana ? sports for medals. So why locate this track at Leonora? What is it about Leonora that makes it ideal for this facility? What advantages does it bring to our leading athletes?

In the Stabroek News of April 8, 2011 a number of our leading athletes expressed their joy that at last they will have a facility worthy of helping them in their preparation for international competition. However, here is a sample of the comments they went on to make (a) ?Well what I think is that it?s good for us to be getting a track. My only concern is where it is.? (b) ?I honestly think they should have found a more centralized area where most athletes come from to put the track. It also is going to cause financial problems for us since we don?t get paid to participate in this sport. What I think the government or AAG should have done was to do a survey with the athletes to see what we want ultimately, as much as it?s benefiting the country, at the end of the day it?s us who it really affects?? (c) ?I just hope they put some sort of transportation means in place for us because training on the track is essential for our development.? (d) ?Basically I would have preferred it being close by in Georgetown where it?s more accessible to us, but my two problems are how close it is to the sea walls which could possibly affect timings and the finance for people travelling??

Then, Stabroek News of April 15, 2012 informed us that on April 14, the Director of Sport and a contingent made up of coaches, athletes and Mr Colin Boyce, the President of the Athletics Association of Guyana, visited the site for the synthetic track at Leonora. The AAG president is quoted as having said, ?What I would also like to say is this; while it is nice to have our national stadium here where we will be holding championships it is absolutely necessary that we have another track, maybe somewhere in Georgetown ? like the National Park because we will need a track of similar surface so that the athletes can train meaningfully.? What! we are already speaking of a ?similar track? for Georgetown, even before this one is completed? So again what was the reasoning behind placing this facility at Leonora? Whose decision was this since the athletes do not approve of its location?

But Editor, the comedy that Guyana has become does not end here. During 2011the cattle farmers of Region 3, came out in protest against the government?s decision to use land that they used for grazing purposes for the construction of this synthetic athletic track. After the farmers protested, the Minister of Agriculture at that time, Mr Robert Persaud, informed the nation that cabinet was meeting with an aim of providing these farmers with alternative grazing land. The voices raised against the location of this track did not end there. In the Stabroek News of? November 18, 2011, we had a community member talking about the land having religious significance to the village and that they do not want it converted into an athletic track. In fact, the writer, one Mr Vaidram Persaud, went on to say that the taking away of this land from the Hindus of the area on which they burn holika, ?warrants, therefore, that this matter be thoroughly investigated by none other than the Human Rights Committee of the UN.?

So, Editor, we are going to have a fairly modern track and field facility at Leonora which led to the dislocation of our farmers, the resentment of the community and which brings little satisfaction to our athletes. So, again we are left with the question, what considerations guided the government?s choice of venue for this all-weather track?

Perhaps we can glean some understanding of what guided the authorities? thinking in this matter by referring to two bits of correspondence. First, Mr Freddie Kissoon?s observation on July 4, 2012 that all of the sporting facilities that are of a high standard, built or in the process of being built by the PPP government are located in Indian areas. Secondly; and perhaps more for those of us who were inclined to take Mr Kissoon?s observation lightly, we read in the Stabroek News of? January 23, 2012 a letter written by T Pemberton, telling us that when the track at Leonora is completed he visualizes? ?all track meets will be hosted there. Eventually the Linden meet will be phased out and shifted to Region 3?? Mr Pemberton then proceeds to conclude with what might be a bit of cynicism: ?I say to all the track and field athletes of Guyana who aspire to stardom ? start saving towards transportation and gasoline.?

In Guyana one cannot doubt that there has been some effort at creating adequate facilities, access to which, would to some extent, offer our sportsmen and women a modicum of a chance of becoming competitive. However, like most things initiated by the government these efforts seem to have been informed by reasons that have nothing to do with what is in the best interest of the specific sport. If I am correct, when the modern history of this country is written the athletic track being constructed at Leonora will stand with the Berbice River Bridge, as visible symbols of the disastrous effects of our period of race-based politics.

Editor, if the ?single sports academy? of which Mr Sanders speaks, comes into being, Guyanese athletes will be at a disadvantage in the fight to secure space at this facility. Remember, the facility will be ?for the region?s elite athletes.? This means that the process for gaining a place there will be competitive. Not only is this modern track being located in a community that does not want it, it poses our national athletes who traditionally come from the poor families of Georgetown, East Coast Demerara and Linden with tremendous challenges ? for example, acquiring money for travel, and being able to train before darkness steps in. Generally our leading athletes start their training either around 5.30 am before they go to work, and/or in the afternoons commencing around 5.30 pm. The facility at Leonora rules out morning training. The possibility for afternoon training does not hold out much encouragement either. We all are aware that persons living on the West Bank of Demerara and working in Georgetown, struggle to secure transportation to get home before 7pm each working day, so what chance do our athletes have at making themselves competitive so as to secure places at an elite training facility?

With the PPP government?s approach to track and field what it is, is it any wonder that St Kitts and Grenada can win medals at the Olympic Games while Guyana can?t even make the semi-finals? This is all so sad.
Yours faithfully,
Claudius Prince

Your Word-Is It Impeccable?

If you're new here, you may want to subscribe to my RSS feed. Thanks for visiting!

Assorted Magnetic WordsIf you have frequented a bookstore in the past several years, you may be familiar with the small book by Don Miguel Ruiz entitled, The Four Agreements. Most anyone could easily read the book cover to cover while standing in the store, but when you read it with awareness and openness, the words will stay on your mind and begin to impact your thoughts and your life as they expand and shift your mindfulness like water pouring through sand.

The first agreement and truly powerful one is ?Be impeccable with your word. Say only what you mean. Avoid using the word to speak against yourself or to gossip. Use the power of your word in the direction of truth and love.?

The term word means more than the words you speak or write. It means not only the expression of words and beliefs you project out to others verbally and non-verbally, but also inwardly, through self talk. The Latin origin of impeccable means ?to be without sin?. Obviously, being impeccable with your word is easy to say, but requires a lifetime of practice each day to reach mastery. The words you say when you are not mindful are based on the conditioning you have received over your entire life. As humans, we are conditioned by a reward/punishment mindset, both verbally and physically. As adults, negative self talk such as ?I?m fat? is sinful, limiting and damaging according to the definition of impeccable. Saying, ?I will workout five times this week? means you are breaking these negative patterns and approaching your words from the spirit of love. If we can hurt ourselves internally this much with words, just imagine all the ways we hurt or sin against others in the words we express outwardly and unconsciously on a daily basis.

Negativity can quickly expand when you choose to express your opinion of someone or something outside of truth and love. Words that are judgmental and critical ultimately stem from our own underlying fears. Gossip is rampant in spoken word and written word. Hang out at the office water cooler, turn on the news or pick up a magazine at the check out counter of a grocery store and you will see that we have become a society conditioned to gossip. It is why we often find it difficult to avoid in our own personal conversations. It takes consistent mindfulness of integrity and self control to avoid.

As you and I increase our awareness and mindfulness, we begin to use the power of the word in the direction of truth and love. This means that we start by letting go of past hurts and conditioning that no longer serve us through the power of forgiveness. Its about forgiving others and more importantly, about forgiving yourself. Through forgiveness, you are able to reframe the past and let it go in order to clear a new path for truth and love to flow inside your mind and body. As it flows in, you can then begin to express truth and love each moment with integrity and say ?only what you mean in your words, expressions and actions. Being impeccable in your word begins when you allow truth and love to replace unforgiveness, fear and judgement.

This week, I am setting an intention to pause to remember the power of the first agreement before I speak and to use my words in the direction of truth and love both in how I talk to myself and to others. Please join me on this journey to change ourselves and the world, one word, one expression and one action at a time.

President and VIPs hail Neil Armstrong

Saul Loeb / AFP - Getty Images file

First moonwalker Neil Armstrong and President Barack Obama get their picture taken on July 20, 2009, during an Oval Office meeting to commemorate the 40th anniversary of the Apollo 11 moon landing.

Astronaut Neil Armstrong, the first man to walk on the moon, was remembered by friends, colleagues and admirers as a man who made his country believe anything was possible with ingenuity and dedication.

A few examples from the outpouring of expressions for Armstrong, who died today at the age of 82:

President Barack Obama: "Michelle and I were deeply saddened to hear about the passing of Neil Armstrong."

"Neil was among the greatest of American heroes ??not just of his time, but of all time.? When he and his fellow crew members lifted off aboard Apollo 11 in 1969, they carried with them the aspirations of an entire nation.? They set out to show the world that the American spirit can see beyond what seems unimaginable ? that with enough drive and ingenuity, anything is possible. And when Neil stepped foot on the surface of the moon for the first time, he delivered a moment of human achievement that will never be forgotten.

"Today, Neil's spirit of discovery lives on in all the men and women who have devoted their lives to exploring the unknown ??including those who are ensuring that we reach higher and go further in space. That legacy will endure ??sparked by a man who taught us the enormous power of one small step."

Buzz Aldrin, astronaut who was lunar module pilot on Apollo 11: "I am very saddened to learn of the passing of Neil Armstrong today. Neil and I trained together as technical partners but were also good friends who will always be connected through our participation in the mission of Apollo 11. Whenever I look at the moon it reminds me of the moment over four decades ago when I realized that even though we were farther away from earth than two humans had ever been, we were not alone.

"Virtually the entire world took that memorable journey with us. I know I am joined by millions of others in mourning the passing of a true American hero and the best pilot I ever knew. My friend Neil took the small step but giant leap that changed the world and will forever be remembered as a landmark moment in human history. I had truly hoped that in 2019, we would be standing together along with our colleague Mike Collins to commemorate the 50th Anniversary of our moon landing. Regrettably, this is not to be. Neil will most certainly be there with us in spirit.

"On behalf of the Aldrin family, we extend our deepest condolences to Carol and the entire Armstrong family. I will miss my friend Neil as I know our fellow citizens and people around world will miss this foremost aviation and space pioneer. May he rest in peace.?

NBC's Jay Barbree, Brian Williams and former NASA astronaut Mark Kelly reflect on the life of Neil Armstrong.

Michael Collins, the astronaut who piloted the Apollo 11 command module and circled the moon while Aldrin and Armstrong went to its surface: "He was the best, and I will miss him terribly."

John Glenn, former U.S. senator and the first American in orbit, who went through jungle training in Panama with Armstrong: "When I think of Neil, I think of someone who for our country was dedicated enough to dare greatly."

Charles Bolden, NASA administrator: "As long as there are history books, Neil Armstrong will be included in them, remembered for taking humankind's first small step on a world beyond our own. Besides being one of America's greatest explorers, Neil carried himself with a grace and humility that was an example to us all. When President Kennedy challenged the nation to send a human to the moon, Neil Armstrong accepted without reservation. As we enter this next era of space exploration, we do so standing on the shoulders of Neil Armstrong. We mourn the passing of a friend, fellow astronaut and true American hero."

Mitt Romney, presumptive Republican presidential candidate: "Neil Armstrong today takes his place in the hall of heroes. With courage unmeasured and unbounded love for his country, he walked where man had never walked before. The moon will miss its first son of earth. I met and spoke with Neil Armstrong just a few weeks ago ??his passion for space, science and discovery, and his devotion to America will inspire me through my lifetime."

Rep. Paul Ryan, R- Wis., presumptive Republican vice presidential candidate: "We lost a great American today. ? This is a man who proved that we can imagine big things, who showed that in America you can set very lofty goals and accomplish them. Neil Armstrong is the epitome of American vision, American power, American creativity and how we can set the horizons and achieve our goals."

Leon Panetta, secretary of defense: "We are bidding farewell to one of our own.? As a decorated Korean War veteran, as an astronaut for NASA, and as the first man to walk on the moon, Neil inspired generations of Americans to believe that as a nation we are capable of achieving greatness that only comes with determination, perseverance, and hard work. As a true pioneer, his one small step showed all mankind the great feats we can accomplish when we set ourselves to the task.? While Neil is no longer with us, his spirit and his legacy of American achievement and national pride will live forever."

Nancy Conrad, widow of Apollo 12 commander Pete Conrad and founder and chairman of the Conrad Foundation: ?Neil was a humble and personable man ... although he was the first man to walk on the moon, he never asserted his own ego into a conversation. Neil will always be remembered for the inspiration he gave to all of us to press on and to achieve our own personal greatness. He was the personification of the Giant Leap for mankind. Neil was not only a gentleman, he was a gentle man.?

See images from the career of astronaut and American hero Neil Armstrong.

Sen. Bill Nelson, D-Fla., chairman of the Senate Science and Space subcommittee, who flew on the shuttle Columbia in 1986: "Neil Armstrong understood that we should reach beyond the stars. His 'one giant leap for mankind' was taken by a giant of a man."

John Boehner, R-Ohio, House speaker: ?"A true hero has returned to the heavens to which he once flew. Neil Armstrong blazed trails not just for America, but for all of mankind. He inspired generations of boys and girls worldwide not just through his monumental feat, but with the humility and grace with which he carried himself to the end. Ohio has lost one of her proudest sons. Humanity has gained a legend."

Rep. Ralph Hall, R-Texas, chairman of the House Science, Space and Technology Committee: "Neil Armstrong was an inspiration to all Americans, not only for his role in one of the proudest moments in American history, but also for his courage, grace and humility. He exemplified all that is great about mankind, and he will forever be revered as a true American hero."?

Kenneth Murphy, president of the Moon Society: ?In Lunam Aeternum: Neil Armstrong (1930-2012) may be gone, but he will forever be with us.?

Dan Pastuf, chairman, Students for the Exploration and Development of Space: ??Many students first learn about space exploration through the great accomplishments of the past, like Armstrong?s historic and heroic landing on the moon. This was a journey that he himself said only had a 50-50 chance of success. Because of the groundwork Armstrong laid down, young people have been inspired throughout the world to pursue the limits of where we can explore.?

Elliot H. Pulham, CEO, Space Foundation: ?Neil Armstrong was a humble, soft-spoken hero who never forgot that it was the will of the nation and the tireless work of thousands of scientists and engineers that enabled him to take that famous 'giant leap' for mankind. ? Armstrong's quiet resolve and unyielding belief in the importance of exploration will be missed by a grateful nation.?

Lon Rains, chairman, Coalition for Space Exploration: ?Neil was a humble man who devoted his life and his career to serving a greater cause. From the children who strive to explore the stars to those who devote their lives to reaching beyond the bonds of earth, one can only hope to follow in his footsteps."

US doping agency erases Lance Armstrong's titles

His seven Tour de France titles stripped away and his legacy in tatters, Lance Armstrong is heading back outdoors and into the public eye.

A day after the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency punished Armstrong with a lifetime ban from professional cycling and erased 14 years of his career after concluding he used performance-enhancing druugs, Armstrong is scheduled to ride in a mountain bike race in Aspen, Colo., on Saturday and follow it up by running a marathon there Sunday.

And he has no plans to slow down any time soon, despite the whirlwind of controversy swirling around him.

Armstrong spokesman Mark Higgins said Armstrong also still plans to attend the World Cancer Congress in Montreal where's he scheduled to deliver a keynote address to thousands in attendance.

"He's getting out there," Higgins said.

Anti-doping and cycling officials will continue to address his career.

USADA said Friday it expects cycling's governing body to take similar action, but the International Cycling Union was measured in its response, saying it first wanted a full explanation of why Armstrong should relinquish Tour titles he won from 1999 through 2005.

The Amaury Sport Organization, which runs the world's most prestigious cycling race, said it would not comment until hearing from the UCI and USADA. The U.S. agency contends the cycling body is bound by the World Anti-Doping Code to strip Armstrong of one of the most incredible achievements in sports.

Armstrong, who retired a year ago and turns 41 next month, said Thursday he would no longer challenge USADA and declined to exercise his last option by entering arbitration. He denied again that he ever took banned substances in his career, calling USADA's investigation a "witch hunt" without any physical evidence.

USADA chief executive Travis Tygart described the investigation as a battle against a "win-at-all-cost culture," adding that the UCI was "bound to recognize our decision and impose it."

"They have no choice but to strip the titles under the code," he said.

That would leave Greg LeMond as the only American to win the Tour de France, having done so in 1986, 1989 and 1990.

LeMond did not immediately respond to messages requesting comment left through his attorneys and friends.

Armstrong on Friday sent a tweet about his plans to race in Aspen, but did not comment directly on the sanctions.

The UCI and USADA have engaged in a turf war over who should prosecute allegations against Armstrong. The UCI even backed Armstrong's failed legal challenge to USADA's authority, and it cited the same World Anti-Doping Code in saying that it wanted to hear more from the U.S. agency.

"As USADA has claimed jurisdiction in the case, the UCI expects that it will issue a reasoned decision" explaining the action taken, the Switzerland-based organization said in a statement. It said legal procedures obliged USADA to fulfill this demand in cases "where no hearing occurs."

If Tour de France officials follow USADA's lead and announce that Armstrong has been stripped of his titles, Jan Ullrich could be promoted to champion in three of those years. Ullrich was stripped of his third-place finish in the 2005 Tour and retired from racing two years later after being implicated in another doping scandal.

The retired German racer expressed no desire to rewrite the record book of cycling's greatest event, even though he would be the biggest beneficiary.

"I know how the order was on the finishing line at the time," Ullrich said. "I've finished with my professional career and have always said that I was proud of my second-place finishes."

The International Olympic Committee said Friday it will await decisions by USADA and UCI before taking any steps against Armstrong, who won a bronze medal at the 2000 Sydney Games. Besides the disqualifications, Armstrong will forfeit any medals, winnings, points and prizes, USADA said, but it is the lost titles that now dominate his legacy.

Every one of Armstrong's competitive races from Aug. 1, 1998, has been vacated by USADA, established in 2000 as the official anti-doping agency for Olympic sports in the United States. Since Armstrong raced in UCI-sanctioned events, he was subject to international drug rules enforced in the U.S. by USADA. Its staff joined a federal criminal investigation of Armstrong that ended earlier this year with no charges being filed.

USADA said its evidence came from more than a dozen witnesses "who agreed to testify and provide evidence about their firsthand experience and/or knowledge of the doping activity of those involved in the USPS conspiracy," a reference to Armstrong's former U.S. Postal Service cycling team.

The unidentified witnesses said they knew or had been told by Armstrong himself that he had "used EPO, blood transfusions, testosterone and cortisone" from before 1998 through 2005, and that he had previously used EPO, testosterone and Human Growth Hormone through 1996, USADA said. Armstrong also allegedly handed out doping products and encouraged banned methods ? and even used "blood manipulation including EPO or blood transfusions" during his 2009 comeback race on the Tour.

In all, USADA said up to 10 former Armstrong teammates were set to testify against him. Had Armstrong chosen to pursue arbitration, USADA said, all the evidence would have been available for him to challenge.

"He chose not to do this knowing these sanctions would immediately be put into place," the statement said.

Armstrong said he has grown tired of defending himself in a seemingly endless fight against charges that he doped while piling up more Tour victories than anyone. He has consistently pointed to the hundreds of drug tests that he passed as proof of his innocence during his extraordinary run of Tour titles.

"There comes a point in every man's life when he has to say, 'Enough is enough.' For me, that time is now," Armstrong said Thursday night, before the deadline to enter arbitration.

His success helped sell millions of the "Livestrong" plastic bracelets and enabled him to promote cancer awareness and research, raising nearly $500 million since his Lance Armstrong Foundation was started in 1997.

Foundation officials said they remained "proud" of Armstrong and had received hundreds of messages of support from donors, partners and supporters since his announcement. Among them was Nike Inc., which said it planned to continue supporting Armstrong and the foundation.

"Lance has stated his innocence and has been unwavering on this position," the company said.

Anheuser-Busch said its partnership with Armstrong was unchanged. American Century Investments, another partner, issued a statement supporting him.

Egypt reopens Rafah crossing with Gaza: sources

ISMAILIA, EGYPT/GAZA (Reuters) - Egypt reopened the Rafah border crossing with Gaza on Saturday, a lifeline for Gazans which had been closed for much of the month since an August 5 attack on Egyptian guards, Palestinian and Egyptian security sources said.

The move signals an advance in relations between Egypt's new government lead by President Mohammed Mursi and Gaza's Islamist rulers Hamas, which had deteriorated since the attack in which gunmen killed 16 Egyptian soldiers on the Israeli border.

"The Egyptian side has informed us that the Rafah crossing would open all days of the week, without more details," said Ehab Al-Ghsain, spokesman for the interior ministry in Gaza.

The opening of the crossing was confirmed by an Egyptian security source.

Shortly after the attack, Egypt closed the Rafah crossing and moved to seal myriad smuggling tunnels with Gaza on suspicion they might have been used by militants who shot dead the soldiers before storming an Israeli border crossing near Gaza. The attackers were killed by Israeli fire.

The Rafah crossing normally sees some 800 people a day leave for Egypt and beyond, and is the only window on the world for the vast majority of Gazans.

Egypt later said it would open the crossing temporarily, but just for three days, mainly to permit travel for humanitarian purposes such as Palestinians seeking medical care abroad.

Hamas has ruled out suggestions that Palestinian gunmen took part in the Sinai killings and has criticized Cairo for imposing "collective punishment" on the impoverished Mediterranean coastal enclave by sealing the border.

Hamas hoped the election of the Muslim Brotherhood's Mursi would usher in an era of strong ties between Gaza and Cairo, but that has yet to materialize because of strategic considerations involving Egypt's 1979 peace treaty with Israel and related military aid from the United States.

Kvitova wins, Wozniacki retires in New Haven

NEW HAVEN, Conn. (AP) ? Second-seeded Petra Kvitova advanced to the New Haven Open final Friday night with a 6-1, 6-3 victory over Italy's Sara Errani.

The Czech star will play Russian Maria Kirilenko on Saturday. Kirilenko advanced earlier Friday when four-time defending champion Caroline Wozniacki retired from their match with a knee injury after losing the first set, 7-5.

Kvitova, the 2011 Wimbledon champion, needed just 24 minutes to win the first set. She then broke Errani in the first game of the second set and cruised from there, closing out the match with another service break.

Kvitova has already clinched the U.S. Open series championship, winning in Montreal and reaching the semifinals of Cincinnati before her New Haven run.
